Knights knock off Crusaders in C'wealth regular season finale

GLENSIDE, PA:  (Oct. 30, 2010) -  Arcadia University Women's Soccer built upon a 1-0 lead at the half with two more scores from seniors on senior day in the second stanza to cruise to a 3-0 win over visiting Alvernia University in today's Commonwealth Conference regular season finale.  Arcadia ends the regular season with an impressive 14-3-1 overall record with one lone blemish to their 6-1 showing against league opponents.

Although today's game remained scoreless until five minutes remaining in the first half, the Knights controlled this game from start to finish with nine different players registering shots on goal.  First year Sara Volk-Perez (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) put her team on the board in the 40th minute when she recovered a loose ball that deflected off an Alvernia player inside the 8 and shot low to the left side past Crusader keeper Kirsten Kelley giving the Knights a 1-0 lead which stood through the half.  It was the first year's fourth goal of the season and would turn out to be the game winner.

It was only fitting that senior Janelle Jablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) would be the one to add some insurance for the Knights and it would come just five minutes into the second stanza.  While leading the team in scoring, entering today's game, the three-time All Conference player had only two goals to her credit (and 10 assists).  Jablonski snuck down the left side of the field and eluded an Alvernia defender enough to rip a rocket of a shot that carried to the far right twine for a 2-0 Knight's lead.  It was her 16th point of the season which leads the team.  The Knights were looking as if they would take the win by a 2-0 margin until two more seniors got in on the act.  Arcadia would be awarded their 6th corner kick of the contest in the 85th minute and senior Katie O'Malley (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville Area) stepped up for the service.  Her ball was textbook, sent shoulder high into fellow classmate Stephanie Edson (Milton, PA/Milton) who headed the ball into the low short corner past Kelley for a 3-0 Knight's lead.  It was Edson's 3rd goal of the season and O'Malley's third assist of the year.

On the other end of the field was Knight's sophomore keeper Jackie Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood). While she didn't see much action, making the three stops on Alvernia's three shots on goal, she did register her 9th shutout of the season.  Equally impressive is her streak of shutout soccer which runs 480 minutes long, and counting.  Her counterpart, Kelley, made 12 stops for Alvernia who falls to 12-4-4/2-2-3 Commonwealth.  Arcadia led 23-3 in shots, 6-0 in corners and 3-0 on the scoreboard after 90 minutes.

The Knights locked up the #2 seed last week for Wednesday's (Nov. 3) Commonwealth Conference Semi-Finals.  The team will play at home on The New Field with further details regarding opponent, game time and ticket prices forthcoming.
