Faculty-Staff Mentoring Program

Purpose
The Arcadia Athletics Faculty-Staff Mentor Program is designed to help facilitate greater integration between academics and athletics at the university. Mentors are committed individuals that believe that athletics play an integral role in the mission of the university and understand that athletic participation is both meaningful and valuable to the development of a student-athlete. Similar to the mentor relationship for student clubs on campus, faculty-staff mentors voluntarily serve as an additional resource for student-athletes and coaches across campus and help reinforce the ties between the academic and athletic pursuits of student-athletes.

Time Commitment
The amount of time spent with the team will vary from mentor-to-mentor and can be worked out with each respective head coach. It is not necessary for the mentor to be an expert in the sport field. Mentors exist to create partnerships between faculty, staff, student-athletes, and coaches.

Mentors will serve for the academic year. The mentor's continuation for subsequent years will collectively be decided by the Executive Director of Athletics, head coach, and mentor.

Required commitments for faculty-staff mentors:
  • Attend at least one home athletic event for the assigned sport;
  • Attend at least one practice or other activity for the team.

Optional suggestions for faculty-staff mentors:
  • Travel to an away event with the team;
  • Eat a pre-game meal with the team;
  • Go to a team dinner or host a team dinner;
  • Attend a team meeting to discuss ways to balance academic pursuits, career interests, and athletic commitments as well as adjusting to university life;
  • Serve as an additional resource for student-athletes and coaches to navigate academic and social issues as well as general questions;
  • Attend end-of-season team banquet/celebration;
  • Attend end-of-year department banquet reception;
  • Participate in team's community service project(s);
  • Support team and department fundraising initiatives;
  • Meet with prospective student-athletes when they come on campus;
  • Assist with search committees for vacant positions;
  • Meet periodically with the head coach to determine additional ways to support team members.
