Cold shooting, Widener forwards spell loss for Knights in league opener

GLENSIDE, PA:  (Dec. 1, 2010) -  Arcadia University Women's Basketball was handed a 58-36 loss this evening in their home opener against Widener University, also the Commonwealth Conference opener for both teams.

For the Knights, it was like a road game, having only practiced on their newly refurbished court for a handful of times prior to tonight's home opener, as they drop to 2-4 overall.  For Widener, who out-shot Arcadia 40.4% - 24.5% from the floor, they improve to 6-1 on the season fueled by a double-double from Vanessa Hejnas who finished with game highs in points (15) and rebounds (12).  And rebounding was certainly the Pride's strong-suit this evening as well, out-muscling Arcadia on the glass 49-28.

Arcadia, who never held an advantage in tonight's game, was able to keep it a single digit lead for Widener until 1:20 to play in the half.  For most of the half, Arcadia would get as close as five but Angie Adam's jump shot with 8:29 remaining would be the last field goal for the Knights in the half.  Widener's Jennifer Egee, who finished with 13, nailed her team's only three pointer of the contest (1-14, 7%)  at 1:20 for the Pride's largest lead of the half, 24-13 (11) before they closed the half up 26-13.

Widener continued to dominate in the second half, shooting 80% from the line, while they maintained safe distance, leading by as many as 28 with 8 minutes to play, going on for the 58-36 win.  Adams finished with 14 points to lead Arcadia.  Jackie Law added 7 points, 2 assists and 3 steals while Corrine Geiger finished as the Knight's top rebounder with 5 along with 4 points and 2 blocks.  Krista Hsu chipped in with 4 points and 4 rebounds.

Arcadia will look to even their early season Commonwealth record this Saturday on the road against Elizabethtown College.
