Second half surge lifts women's cagers past CalTech 71-56

GLENSIDE, PA:  (Dec. 17, 2010) -  Arcadia University, down by 9 with eight minutes to play in the first, entered the half tied with California Institute of Technology at 29 and put together a strong offensive performance in the second half to secure the 71-56 non-conference victory.  The win for the Knights is their third straight as they improve to 5-5 overall.  The Beavers fall to 0-8.

Despite being out-shot by the Beavers 55.6% - 36.8%, Arcadia caused 17 of 31 CalTech turnovers and shot 36.4% from downtown.  CalTech out-muscled the Knights on the glass 41-28 but would send Arcadia to the line 20 times, where they shot 65%.  Paige Logan led CalTech with 14 points.  Arcadia junior Christine Taylor (Narvon, PA/Garden Spot) scored 16 of her game high 21 points in the second half, including back to back treys in under a minute with 12 minutes to play to put Arcadia on top for good.  Angie Adams '13 (Elkins Park, PA/Abington Friends) added 17 points, 5 assists and 4 steals, also sinking back to back treys to ice the game with under two minutes to play.  Jackie Law '13 (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains Fanwood) led the Knights on the glass, grabbing a team high 9 caroms, all on the defensive end while shooting 50% from the floor, finishing with 8 points.  The sophomore also added 8 steals and 2 assists.  Christie Kershaw '14 (Cheltenham, PA/Cheltenham) provided valuable minutes off the bench for the Knights, playing 22 minutes to finish with 9 poiints, 4 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals.

The game opened with 6 lead changes in the first 3 minutes before Arcadia settled in, taking a 14-8 lead after six minutes played.  However, Arcadia's shooting would hit a cold spell and the Beavers would enjoy a 16-1 run, taking the 24-15 lead with 8:28 to play in the half.  Down 9, Kershaw would cut the Knight's deficit to 1 when first year Krista Hsu (Neward, DE/Delcastle Tech) fould her under the basket for two and then Hsu would convert on a hard fought three point play, putting Arcadia back on top 26-24 with 4:08 remaining in the half.  CalTech would force two more ties to send the game into halftime at a 29-29 stalemate.

The Knights went 2-11 from the floor and would find themselves down by 6 after the first six minutes of second half play before their offense kicked in.  It would be back to back three pointers from Taylor, the first at the 13 minute mark, the next at 12:13 which gave Arcadia a 42-41 lead.  Taylor would attempt another long range shot but would be fouled in the act, and iced all three free throw attempts giving Arcadia a seven point lead with 5:06 to play.  CalTech made the same mistake again just 3 minutes later, sending Taylor to the line again for three more made free throws giving Arcadia a 10 point margin (62-52). Taylor finished the evening 10-12 from the stripe.  Over the course of the final 13 minutes, CalTech would make 4 costly turnovers, all leading to points for the Knights.  With under two minutes to play, Adams would strike for back to back three pointers, the second giving Arcadia a 16 point advantage (68-52).  Finally, with only one tick on the clock, senior Kelly Donahue (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South), sent her first points of the game through the net from beyond the arc, to cap the Knights 8-22 shooting from three point land and the game 71-56 in her team's favor.  Hsu would finish with 5 points, 2 assists and 2 steals while senior Corrine Geiger (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) and first year Jessica Campbell (Huntington Valley, PA/Villa Joseph Marie) provided 4 points apiece.

Tonight's win allowed Arcadia to even their early season record at 5-5 and the team remains idle until Jan. 6 when they travel to non-conference opponent Marywood University.
