CAMDEN, NJ (Sept. 1, 2010) – The Arcadia University men's soccer team received second-half goals from senior forward
Joe Clementi (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) and freshman forward
Nick Morris (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) as it rallied past Rutgers University-Camden, 2-1, in the season opener for both teams.
In a game where both teams had eight shots and Arcadia held a slim 6-5 edge in corner kicks, the Scarlet Raptors held a 1-0 halftime lead on the first career goal by freshman forward Zaiere Putmon (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown). Putmon ran onto a long pass up the right side by senior midfielder Shane McGrory (Laurel Springs, NJ/Sterling) and ripped a rocket to the back left corner at 25:16 of the opening half. The goal came only 6:12 after he entered a collegiate game for the first time as a substitute.
Arcadia tied the contests only 2:42 into the second half when Morris sent a cross from the left side to the top of the box, where Clementi took the feed and buried a shot into the back let corner.
The Knights took the lead in the 52nd minute when Morris lofted a long direct kick from the left side that snuck over Raptor junior goalie Tim VanLiew (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) and snuck under the crossbar.
VanLiew finished with two saves for the Scarlet Raptors, while Arcadia freshman keeper Ryan Lantzy (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) notched three saves.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday and Sunday when it competes in the adidas Kick-Off Classic at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. The Scarlet Raptors face Brandeis University at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Arcadia travels to FDU-Florham for an 11 a.m. game Saturday.
