CENTER VALLEY, PA (Sept. 25, 2010) – Arcadia Men's Soccer outshot the Bulldogs of DeSales 15-12 but junior Jonathan Balfour (London, England/Conestoga {PA}) netted two goals to lead the DeSales University men's soccer team past Arcadia, 3-1, in non-conference action in Center Valley. The loss is the second straight for the Knights who fall to 3-5 overall. DeSales jumps to 7-2 overall with today's win.
The Bulldogs started the scoring early just 1:25 into the game when Balfour seemed to take a long pass from senior Aaron Gildner (Slatington, PA/Parkland) and fired a volley into the right portion of the goal for a 1-0 lead. The game re-started but was quickly stopped as a linesman came over to talk with the field referee. The goal was taken off the board and a hand ball in the box was called prior to the goal being scored after the field referee had blown the play dead with the handball call before the goal. Junior Derek Long (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) then took the penalty kick and beat the first year goalkeeper Ryan Lantzy (Pheonixville, PA/Pheonixville) for the 1-0 lead.
That score stood into halftime as the Knights enjoyed a 5-4 edge in shots in the opening half. Balfour then officially did get into the scoring act 5:16 into the second half when he took a header from Long and fired his fourth goal of the season into the back of the net. Just over nine minutes later Balfour netted his fifth of the year off a back pass from senior Sky Rimmele (Lenharsville, PA/Moravian Academy).
Arcadia got on the board late when first year Dean Search (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) headed home a centering pass from senior JP Hash (Lyndonville, VT/Lyndon Institute) to provide the final margin. The goal was scored in the 88th minute and was the first collegiate goal for Search. Arcadia held a 15-12 edge in shots for the game and had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Adam Franczak (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) made four saves for the Bulldogs. Lantzy turned aside one DeSales shot on goal.
The Knights will play rival Eastern University this Tuesday in their long awaited home opener on The New Field. Alumni Celebrity Grillers will be serving free hot dogs and cold drinks to those in attendance. Kick off will be at 4 pm.
