Knights go down fighting, lose to Lions 68-58

READING, PA:  (Jan. 19, 2011) -  Arcadia University fought out of a 9 point hole midway through the second half of tonight's Commonwealth Conference women's basketball game at host Albright College, using a 10-0 run to take 52-51 lead with 7:48 to play, but could not overcome the steady hands of the Lions who would hang on to win by ten, 68-58.   With the win, Albright improves to 6-8 overall and 2-4 within the Commonwealth standings while Arcadia drops to 6-10 overall and 1-5 in league play.

Angie Adams '13 notched the first of her game high 7 assists on the opening play when Christine Taylor '12 sank the first of her game high five three pointers and the Knights would remain in front until Albright took an 11-10 lead with 13:21 to play in the half.  Arcadia would regain the lead at 10:24 and remain in front until Albright's Jessica McGuinness tied it at 18-all at 7:22.  The Lions pulled in front and despite two game tying buckets from Arcadia's Krista Hsu '14, the Lions held on for a five point halftime lead (33-28).

The Lions extended their lead to 41-35 with 13:25 to play in the game but could not hold Arcadia down as the Knights used back to back jumpers from Christie Kershaw '14 to fend off too much damage done from Jenny Knoebels' two three point bombs just 1:43 apart.  Those buckets kept Albright in front by seven, 47-40 with ten minutes to play in the game.  Taylor then upstaged Albright's pair of downtown rainmakers, with two of her own in half the time, just 35 seconds apart, cutting Albright's nine point lead to one, 51-50.  Taylor's three's, both assisted by Adams, were apart of a 10-0 Arcadia run, capped by Hsu when she followed up on a steal by Jackie Law '13 at 7:58 to give the Knights their first lead since the 9:02 mark of the first half.  The Knights would find themsleves down by six, 60-54 when they would take a time-out, but on the ensuing play, Corrine Geiger '11 sacrificed her 5th foul in liu of ten point deficit with 1:52 to play but Knoeble iced both free throws giving the Lions the 64-54 advantage.  Hsu would clean up a missed shot and bring it back to an 8 point Arcadia deficit, 56-64 with 1:10 to play, but the Knights forced Albright into the double-bonus with 39 seconds to go and the Lions were able to put away the game 58-66 in their favor.

The Lions enjoyed a better evening on offense, as they out-shot Arcadia 40-% to 34% from the floor and 63%-55% from the free throw line.  Turnovers were near even at 17 (Albright) -16 (Arcadia).  Albright used three players scoring in double figures led by McGuinness' 15, 11 points, 13 rebounds from Rose Williamson and 10 points from Marilynn McMonagle.  Taylor had the hot hand for the Knights, leading all scorer's with 19 points, five coming off the three, to go along with 3 assists and a steal.  Law scored 14 points on 6-8 from the floor and 2-2 at the line, along with 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.  Hsu came off the bench to score 10 points, adding 5 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal.  Adams dished out 7 assists, scored 7, grabbed 4 boards and made 2 steals while Kershaw chipped in with 6 points but led the Knights on the glass with 11 rebounds.

Arcadia will host Commonwealth Conference member Messiah College this Saturday, Jan. 22 at 1 PM.
