Slow start plagues Knights in 58-38 loss at Marywood

SCRANTON, PA:  (Jan. 6, 2011) -  Arcadia University Women's Basketball was handed a 58-38 loss by host Marywood University Thursday night in non-conference play.  The Knights, whose last outing was twenty days ago, a 71-56 victory over California Tech, shot just 17.9 % from the floor in the first half and was not able to shake off the rust until the second stanza when the Pacers had already built up a commanding lead.  Tonight's win for the Pacers avenges a one-point Arcadia victory from a season ago in Glenside.

Marywood's Alysa Mayo opening the game's scoring while the Knights missed their first seven chances and it wasn't until  Angie Adams '13 hit the back end of two free throw tosses at 16:14 to put her team on the board, down 5-1.  Christie Kershaw '14 cleaned up the glass with two points underneath and Krista Hsu '14 would hit a free throw at 14:22 to make it a 5-4 Pacer advantage, however, that would be as close as the Knights would come to the hosts on the scoreboard.  The Pacers would take a ten point lead (15-5) with under ten minutes to play in the first half only to have Jackie Law '13 respond with back to back buckets in the paint to bring Arcadia within 6 points of the Pacers 15-9 lead.  Mayo and Allison Bruet both converted layups to give Marywood an 11 point advantage at 5:27 but then Adams nailed a three pointer as Arcadia pulled within 8 (21-13) with 4:07 to play in the half. The three by Adams could have sparked a turning point for the Knights but Marywood's Marielle Thorsen delivered a crushing blow with back to back three pointers in a 42 second span, with Bruet adding another jump shot to give the Pacers a 16 point spread at the half (33-15).

In the second half, Marywood saw their lead grow to 22 on three occassions, and even though the Knights were slowly finding their offense, the closest they would come would be a 14 point deficit with 3:26 remaining in the contest.

Law led the Knight's efforts with her fourth double-double of the year, with team highs in points (13), rebounds (11) and steals (4).  Corrine Geiger '11 played solid game on the defensive glass, hauling in 8 rebounds while Adams finished with 10 points, 6 boards and 6 assists.  The Knights, who were outshot by the Pacers 25.9% to 35.5%, out-muscled Marywood on the boards, where they out-rebounded the Pacers 46-41.  Arcadia committed ten first half turnovers and 21 by the end of regulation while struggling from both beyond the arc (2-16/12.5%) and at the line (6-15/40%).  Thorsen and Carly Leitzel led Marywood with 12 points apiece.  Thorsen added a team high 8 rebounds while Bruet finished with 10 points, 5 boards and 6 assists for the Pacers who improve to 8-4.

Arcadia (5-6, 0-2 C'wealth) is looking ahead to this Saturday's home matchup against #17 Lebanon Valley College (12-1, 2-0 C'wealth) where they will tip off against the Dutchmen at 1 PM.
