Stevenson spoils Women's Basketball season opener

Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa.:  Stevenson University combined balanced scoring with a dominating presence under the glass to defeat Arcadia University 65-42 in tonight's women's basketball non-conference season opener at the Kuch Center.

Two head coaches made their debuts with their respective programs this evening, Jackie Boswell for the visiting Mustangs and Lorie Khalil for the home Knights.  “While the final result is unsatisfying,” noting Khalil about tonight's loss, “we will continue to improve as a unit and persevere through our work in practice.  We have to improve our positioning on the defensive boards and finish our offensive execution.  Once we clean that up, we will produce better results on game day.”

The Knights (0-1) shot just 22.4% from the floor, made 1 of 9 three point attempts and struggled at the line, shooting 57.7%.  Comparatively, the Mustangs (1-0) managed just 29.8% from the floor, went 4 of 22 from behind the arc and converted just 55% of their free throws.   However, Arcadia couldn't solve the persistence of Stevenson led by Rayshell Parker's game high 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Parker nailed a game opening trey and went on to score 16 of those points in the opening stanza that ended 39-22 in the Mustang's favor.  The Knights went 2-8 from the floor in the opening 12 minutes of tonight's game falling behind 15-5, a deficit they were unable to recover from.

Junior Angie Adams (Elkins Park, PA/ Friends Select) cashed in on a team high 17 points for the Knights, adding in 3 assists and 3 steals.  Sophomore Krista Hsu (Newark, DE/Delcastle Tech) scored 13, pulled in 9 boards and made 3 steals while sophomore Christie Kershaw (Cheltenham, PA/Cheltenham) finished with a team high 15 boards and 6 points.

Stevenson avenges last season loss to Arcadia, a 56-45 win by the Knights.  The teams' next scheduled meeting will be in conference play in 2012-13, when the Mustangs join the Middle Atlantic Conferences (MAC)-Commonwealth Conference
.
The Knights make their first road trip of the year, traveling to nearby Camden, NJ to play in the Rutgers-Camden University Raptor Tip-Off Tournament on Friday and Saturday.  Arcadia takes on the host Raptors Friday evening at 6 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. tip against Rosemont College on Saturday.
