Knights drop season opener to Marywood

Box Score DALLAS, Pa.:  Down by one at the half, Arcadia University battled back and forth against Marywood University over a fourteen minute stretch to open the second half before a short stint of missed shots and turnovers by the Knights led to the Pacers regaining the lead for good and winning the opening game of the 20th Annual McCarthy Tire Laurel Line Tournament hosted by Misericordia University Friday evening by a score of 70-60.

Arcadia (0-1) will face Baptist Bible in tomorrow's consolation game at 6 p.m.

Senior Colin McCarthy (Langhorne, PA/Holy Ghost) scored 9 of his team high 14 points during that nerve-racking second half stretch that saw the lead change hands fourteen times.  McCarthy also added 9 rebounds and 2 steals.  Junior Khalief Trawick (Philadelphia, PA/Franklin Learning Center) scored 13 points along with 4 boards, 2 steals and 2 assist.  Newcomers Joe Brown (Philadelphia, PA/LaSalle) and Aaron Lee-Webb (Norristown, PA/Norristown) made key contributions in their first collegiate game with Brown leading the Knights in rebounding with 10 (6 pts.) and Webb scoring 11 points with 3 steals and 2 helpers.

The Pacers (1-1) opened up on a 9-0 run to start tonight's contest.  Webb knocked down a three point bucket at 12:10 to cut Arcadia's deficit to 3 and the Knights were within one point of tying it up on three occasions before senior Jason Thompson (Cape May Courthouse, NJ/Middle Twp.) gave Arcadia their first lead with a layup at 5:19 (22-21).  However Marywood regained their advantage and remained in front by one at the break 28-27.

The Knights' last held the lead (47-46) at 9:12 when McCarthy hit the front end of a one-and-one.  The Pacers regained the lead for good at 8:48 when the games leading scorer James Lavan nailed a pair of free throws putting Marywood in front 48-47.  Arcadia would miss their next four shots while giving up 5 turnovers with the Pacers hitting four straight and nailing 8 of 9 from the charity mark over the next 4:43 to keep command of the game.  Lavan finished with 19 points for the Pacers who also got 11 points each from Brent Keyes and Matt Lepri.

While Arcadia out-rebounded Marywood 42-39 the victors enjoyed the better night shooting from the floor 43% to Arcadia's 35% as well as a slight advantage from the line 64.7% to 61.9% for the Knights.
