Crothers leads Knights in loss to E'town

Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa.:  Sophomore Jenna Crothers (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) scored a career and game high of 21 points in 40 minutes of play but the Knights fell down by ten after the opening six minutes and couldn't catch up to Elizabethtown with the Blue Jays taking tonight's Commonwealth Conference opening game 68-48.  Arcadia drops to 0-4 to start the season with the Blue Jays improving to 4-1. 

The Blue Jays hit three of their first five shots to open up a 7-0 lead in the opening five minutes and except for an Arcadia basket by Crothers to cut the Knight's deficit to 5, E'town enjoyed a 15-3 run over the ensuing six minutes to take a 17 point lead.  The Blue Jays never allowed the Knights to get any closer, scoring 16 of their 40 first half points in the paint and 13 off of Arcadia turnovers for a 40-19 lead at the half. 

Arcadia shot just 14.3% in the opening twenty that saw the Blue Jays shoot 44.1%.  For the game, the Blue Jays out-shot the Knights 37% to 28.2%.  Arcadia did shoot better from long range (40% to the Blue Jays' 20%) and at the stripe, where Arcadia hit for 71.4% to E'town's 64.3%.

Crothers finished 7-13 from the floor, 3-5 from three-point range and 4-6 from the line, adding 2 rebounds and 3 steals.  Sophomore Christie Kershaw (Cheltenham, PA/Cheltenham) finished with a double-double on 11 points and 13 rebounds, a game high. Kershaw also added 2 blocked shots and 2 steals and went 9-13 at the line through 40 minutes. Senior Christine Taylor (Navron, PA/Garden Spot) scored 10 points, pulled down 5 boards and went 4-4 at the line, also playing the full 40.

Shooting improved for Arcadia in the second half, hitting 8-18 (44.4%) from the floor which included 5-6 from beyond the arc. E'town controlled the glass 46-33 and made ten less turnovers.

Jayci Scannapieco led the Blue Jays with 12 points and 9 rebounds, Cheyenne Stonerook with 11 points and 9 boards with Stephanie Ellwood chipping in with 11. 

The Knights continue on their pursuit of the season's first victory with another Commonwealth battle on tap for this Saturday, a 1 p.m. tip-off against the defending league champs, the No. 8 Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa.  Arcadia returns home after that to close the month of December with a three-game home stand, which begins on Monday, Dec. 5 against Penn State-Abington at 6 p.m.
