Knights take it to Abington, win season's first

Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa.:  With their first win in six tries, Arcadia University won by 20 over visiting Penn State Abington Monday evening, 88-68, in a high scoring game that saw Christine Taylor deliver a triple double, Jenna Crothers pouring in a career-high 31, a double-double from Jessica Campbell and the first for Michaela Holleran.

The Knights enjoyed one of their finer first half shooting affairs of the season behind a 16-point effort from Crothers.  Arcadia seemed to score from everywhere, with 9 points, 9 rebounds from Holleran, 8 points, 8 rebounds from Taylor and 8 points from sophomore guard Veronika Bailey, who went 2 for 3 from downtown in the opening twenty minutes to end with a career high 13 points.  Bailey broke the game's third tie at 14:09 and put the Knights ahead for good with a strong move to the glass.

Arcadia was all over the boards in the first half and finished the game with an advantage of ten, 65-55.

Arcadia led 45-29 at the break and remained in front by 11 or more over the second half.

Taylor's resourcefulness on offense provided her with 14 trips to the line. She made 11 of those, hit a three and scored 22 but also recovered a career high 21 rebounds while dishing out 10 assists.

Arcadia's defense rendered Abington leading scorer Trish Watson to just 10 points, 13 off her season average of 23 as the junior found her-self in foul trouble early on.

Crothers added 11 more trips to free throw land, making 5, part of Arcadia's 39 attempts to Abington's 16.  Along with Crothers' 31, she added 6 assists.  Holleran scored 12, going 3 of 6 from downtown with 2 assists and 4 steals but hung around the glass and pulled down 16 boards, 15 on the defensive end.  Holleran recorded her first double-double along with one from Campbell who provided a balanced effort this evening, scoring 10 with 12 boards and 3 assists.

The Knights finished shooting 41.8% from the field, 45% from downtown and 59% from the stripe. The Lions shot 28% from field-goal range, 17% from behind the arc while going 10 of 16 on their free shots.  Abington (0-4) was led by Gabrielle Benedict's 26 points, 11 rebounds and Jacyln Vandivers' 18 points and 14 boards.

Tonight's win was the first of the season for Arcadia and the first program-win for first-year head coach Lorie Khalil.  The Knights (1-5, 0-2 CC) return to the Kuch Center on Wednesday, Dec. 7 hosting Penn State-Hazleton at 6 p.m.
