Shooting Woes Plague Knights at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa., Sunday, Feb. 12, 2011--  Arcadia University Women's Basketball, only able to make six field goals in each half of today's Commonwealth Conference women's basketball game, and allowed 24 Messiah College points off of the Knight's 30 turnovers and was defeated 61-39 the host Falcons Saturday evening on the road. Angie Adams '13 led the Knights and all scorer's with 14 points and went a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line but her team could not overcome a 15 point halftime deficit as Arcadia drops to 7-16 overall and 1-11 in the league. Messiah, who knocked off nationally ranked Lebanon Valley College earlier this week, sweeps the season series between the two teams, and improves to 16-6 overall and 10-2 on the Commonwealth.

The Falcons got to work early and took a 10-point lead just six minutes into the opening half on a layup by Nicky Hess. The Falcons would go up by 17, before the Knights would find a small spark.  Two three point buckets, that would turn out to be their only made threes of the contest, would come from senior Kelly Donahue and junior Chrissy Taylor to bring Arcadia back to within 11 of Messiah 25-14 lead with 5:14 to play in the half.  Neither team would hit from the floor over the next three minutes before Messiah would take a 33-18 lead into the lockerroom.

The Falcons got right to work to start the second and with a three pointer from Taylor Miller, Messiah went up by 20 (38-18) a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game. The Falcons' defense made the most of Arcadia's ball handling, converting 24 points off the Knight's 30 turnovers in the game. Shooting just 30 percent from the floor, Arcadia went 5-for-6 from the free throw line and was held without a second half field goal until the six minute mark when Adams finally broke the dry spell.

Senior Corrine Geiger grabbed a team and game high 10 rebounds for Arcadia while adding seven points. Sophomore Jackie Law also finished with seven points and six rebounds. Dori Gyori finished with 10 points for the Falcons who got 23 points from their bench personell.

The Knights play at Widener University on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. before closing out the 2010-11 season at home on Saturday against Elizabethtown College at 1 p.m.
