Knight's late run not enough at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, PA:  (Feb. 5, 2011) -  Arcadia University Women's Basketball used a 7-0 run late in the second half of today's Commonwealth Conference women's basketball at host Lycoming College to erase an 11 point Warrior lead down to two but a critical turnover and made free throw from Lycoming prevented the Knights from victory with Lycoming holding on to win by 6, 65-59.  With today's win, Lycoming improves to 9-12 and 4-6 among Commonwealth opponents.  Arcadia, who defeated the Warriors early this season in Glenside for their first-ever win in the Commonwealth Conference, drop their third straight and fall to 7-14 and 1-9 in the league.

The start of today's game saw the lead change hands three times before Lycoming's Rachael Scheller hit a three pointer to break a 7-7 draw.  The Warriors would take that momentum and convert it into a 24-11 run by the 4:46 mark of the first half.  Down 16, Arcadia would cut their deficit to 11 by halftime (36-25).

By the 17:39 mark of the second half, Corrine Geiger '11 went to the line and sank both, to bring her Knight's within four (36-32).  It would be the first of three occassions Arcadia would cut their deficit to four.  Lycoming matched their 11 point advantage with 10:43 to play when Kaitlyn Ober layed one off the glass.  With 6:18 on the clock, Jackie Law '13 went to the line and converted both to bring Arcadia back within four (48-44) and would do it again with 45 seconds to play, with two more points from the free throw line to keep the margin at four (56-52).  Law, who finished her 7th double-double of the season on 14 points and 16 rebounds, went 6-6 from the charity stripe.  Down four with under one minute remaining, Law caused a Lycoming turnover and took the ball to the hole for two and a two point Arcadia deficit with 45 second to play.  Lycoming's Erin Connaghan missed the back end of a one and one opportunity that would have made it a two-possession game with 25 seconds to play. Instead, the Knights hauled in the defensive rebound and called a timeout.  Coming out of the timeout, it looked as if the Knights were setting up for a three pointer, but the ball was turned over to the Warriors before they could get off a shot attempt.  Forced to foul, the Knight's sent Lycoming's Jess Knott to the line, where she hit both with 15 seconds to go, giving Lycoming a 59-54 lead.  Arcadia would fail to convert on their final layup of the game with 9 seconds on the clock and Lycoming would hold on for the six point victory.

The Warriors out-shot Arcadia 37.7% - 28.8% from the floor and 72.2% - 68.2% from the free throw line.  The Warriors, who committed three more turnovers (13-10), held the advantage on the glass 45-40.

Led by three players in double-figure scoring, along with Law's double-double, Arcadia got 12 points and 6 assists from Angie Adams '13 and 13 points from Christine Taylor '12.  Geiger finished with 6 points and 4 boards while Kelly Donahue '11 chipped in with 5 points and 4 boards.  Making her first collegiate start was Krista Hsu '14 who finished with 2 points and 7 rebounds.  Lycoming was led by Julia Antonelli's 18 points and 9 rebounds while Ober finished with the double-double on 14 points. 12 boards and 6 assists.

The Knights return to play this Wednesday evening hosting Albright College at 6 PM.  The game is the first of the Commonwealth doubleheader and is the team's annual WBCA Pink Zone game for breast cancer awareness.
