Moravian Takes Two from Knights

BETHLEHEM, Pa., Sunday, April 17, 2011-- Arcadia University Baseball traveled to Moravian College this afternoon to take on the Greyhounds in the rescheduled double-header from Saturday afternoon. The Knights struggled to convert offense all afternoon, only managing to push two runs across the board combined in between the two games, falling in the opener 5-1, and 3-1 in the second game of the double-header.

In game one Arcadia jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, as sophomore Brandon Martin got the Knights going early with lead-off single, coming around to score on an two-out RBI single off the bat of junior Kyle Jackson. Unfortunately for the Knights this would be the only scoring option in the opener, managing only two more hits for the entire game. The Greyhounds would answer Arcadia's top of the first run with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning, scoring another in the bottom of the third and two more insurance runs in the fifth to take the game 5-1.

Senior Jason Herlya took the game-one loss for Arcadia, pitching six innings allowing five runs, only two of which were earned on five hits.

Game two saw the Greyhounds get on the board first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Marc Gottfried was on the hill for the Knights and kept Arcadia close pitching a scoreless third, fourth and fifth innings, in hope the Arcadia bats would awaken for a comeback. In the top of the sixth inning, Arcadia got two consecutive one-out hits from sophomore Jerry Smith and Jackson, putting a runner in scoring position. Smith would come around to score a Moravian outfield error, cutting the Greyhound lead to 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning.

However just like in game one Moravian would respond with a run of their own to go ahead 3-1. The Knights would go down quietly in the seventh to secure the Moravian victory. Gottfried finished the afternoon going the distance giving up three runs only one earned on six hits. Smith went 3-3 in the game two loss of the Knights.

Arcadia returns to the field Tuesday April 19 when they welcome John Jay of New York to Erny Field for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
