PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Tuesday, April 19, 2011-- Arcadia University welcomed John Jay to Erny Field, and a rude welcoming it was as the Knights exploded for 12 runs on 14 hits, including a 5-0 lead after the first inning. First-years
Jay Zehring and
Patrick Kwiatkowski combined for a
5-8 days with four RBIs leading the Knights to victory.
The Knights took advantage of Jay's miscues in the first inning to gain the early lead, as the first three Knight batters reached base without ganering a hit. Already with a one-run lead, Zehring stepped to the plate with two runners aboard and singled to left field for an RBI and 2-0 lead. Arcadia was not finished there, following a walk, first-year
Brian Inella delivered a two-RBI single up the middle keeping the Knight first inning rally alive and four-run lead. The Knights would bring home one more run before John Jay would be able to retire the side in the first, as Kwiatkowski singled to right field for an RBI. Shutting down the Jay offense quickly in the second, the
Knights looked to build upon their first inning success at the plate, as Junior
Kyle Jackson earned a two-out walk to put a runner on board for Zehring would took the next pitch to the center field wall for an RBI double and a 6-0 Arcadia lead.
Jay would look to respond to the early Arcadia offense, scoring a run in the third and two more in the top of the fourth, cutting the lead to 6-3. However, on this day the Knights were ready for the challenge and three unanswered runs of their own over the fourth and fifth innings, to again push their advantage to six runs.
After holding Jay scoreless in tbe middle innings, Arcadia went back to work at the plate in the seventh innning, looking to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Nick Petroski got the innings started with a one-out single to left field, and stealing second to put a runner in scoring position for Kwiatkowski who came through with another RBI single. Using an agressive mentality, Kwiatkowski stole second and third base putting pressure on the John Jay pitching and defense to come through with a big play to stay close, but as witnessed earlier in the game, this was a weakness as Kwiatkowski scored on a pass ball for an 8-3 lead. The Knights would tack on one more run before the inning was out with a RBI single off the bat of junior Marc Gottfried, taking a 12-3 advantage into the final two innings of play.
Jay would attempt a rally in the ninth however, Arcadia pitching made sure it was short-lived as Arcadia came out with the 12-4 win. Junior Adam Planamento went five innings giving up three runs on five hits to earn the win. First-year David Jacobs and ehring combined for the final two innings on the mound allowing one run on five hits.
Arcadia returns to action April 21 when they travel to Annville, Pa. to take on conference opponent Lebanon Valley College in the first game of the three-game series. The series will conclude in Philadelphia with a Saturday double-header.
