PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Monday, April 25, 2011-- Lebanon Valley College completed a three-game sweep of the Knights this afternoon at Erny field, taking the opener 14-4 and the stealing the night cap 9-8. Arcadia held a lead in both games, however, was unable to fend off the offensive attack of the Dutchmen.
In game one, Lebanon Valley scored three runs in the top of the first to take an early lead, however Arcadia would answer with four unanswered runs, one in the third, and three in the fifth to take a 4-3 edge after five innings of play. Arcadia's first run was generated off a lead-off single by first-year
Patrick Kwiakowski and he was brought home off the a bunt single by junior
Marc Gottfried to put the Knights on the board and cut the lead to 3-1. Both team would go scoreless in the fourth, and Arcadia's offense would awaken again the fifth inning, when sophomore
Nick Petroski got the inning started with a single up the middle. After Kwiakowski reached base on an error, first-year
Brandon Martin would deliver with a bunt single, on which the Dutchmen infielder misplayed allowing Petroski
to score and the runners to advance to second and third with no one down. A Gottfried RBI ground-out and sophomore
Jerry Smith RBI single brought both runners home, Smith's single giving the Knight's their first lead of the afternoon.
However, the Arcadia rally was short-lived as Lebanon Valley answered with six runs of their own in the top of the sixth and touched up the Knight pitching staff for five more runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Senior
Jason Herlya took the game one loss, surrendering nine runs, six earned on 10 hits in six innings of action.
Game two started off just as the opener as the Dutchmen again put a three spot on the board in the top half of the opening inning to stake an early lead. And just like in game one, the Knights showed their resiliency, countering with seven unanswered runs, scoring one run in the second, third, and fourth innings, and four in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-3 lead. Arcadia used timely hitting and base-running to push all their runs across the plate, as
Mike McElhatton drove home three and junior
Kyle Jackson brought home two more, to aide in the Knights attach.
Unfortunately deja vu would strike again, as right after Arcadia put together their biggest inning of the game, the Dutchmen answered back with a six run inning of their own for the 9-7 lead and would hold off a late Knight rally to win 9-8.
Arcadia will next travel to Delaware to take on Wesley College on April 27 for a non-conference single game. That game is slated for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
