Baseball Falls Short in Comeback on Senior Day

Senior Jason Heryla
PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Saturday, April 30, 2011-- Arcadia University down 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh and final inning, rallied for two runs to tie the game. However the Pride answered with two huge home runs in the top of the eighth inning to take game two 7-3. The Pride also won the opener 11-4 to sweep the weekend series. Arcadia will conclude the 2011 season Tuesday when they travel to Delaware Valley for a non-conference affair.

In game two Widener jumped out to a 2-0 lead through three innings of play before the Knights got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when junior Kyle Jackson tripled home classmate Marc Gottfried who opened the inning with a walk. The score would remain 2-1 until the top of the seventh inning when the Pride added what they thought to be an insurance run going into the final half inning of play.

Trailing by two runs, in the final Commonwealth Conference game of the season, the Knights looked to make a late comeback. Jackson again got the offense started with a lead off single to third base, sophomore Matt Snyder followed Jackson with a single of his own putting the game tying run on base with no outs. Both runners would come around to score to tie the game at three runs apiece and force extras. However, Widener's four runs in the top of the eighth put the game away and secured the three-game sweep for the Pride.

Arcadia's lone senior on the 2011 season Jason Heryla started game one, however Widener's offense wouldn't allow a storybook ending. In five innings Heryla gave up nine runs, eight earned on 11 hits while walking three.

Widener scored the first ten runs in the opener to put the game away early. Arcadia answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to four, however, Widener answered with a run in the top seventh to win 11-4.
