Knights bombard Griffins for five in home opener

GLENSIDE, Pa.:  Sophomore Sam Davis (Moorsetown, NJ/Moorsetown) and her sister, junior Alex Davis (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) scored goals in a four minute span, giving Arcadia University an early 2-0 lead and the Knights added three more scores to hand visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College a 5-0 shutout loss in today's non-conference women's soccer home opener .  Ranked No. 4 in this week's Mid-Atlantic National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, the Knights improve to 4-1-1 overall while the Griffins fall 0-5-1.

In the 9th minute, Sam Davis sent in a cross that was deflected in by a Griffin defender giving Arcadia a 1-0 lead.  However, there was no mistake about goal number two for the Knights as Sam Davis' lead pass made it's way through for her sister Alex at 13:16 putting the Knights up 2-0.  Arcadia continued to dominate time of possession and sent goal number three past Griffin keeper Abby Reed in the 43rd minute as first year Kim Canfield (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) served up a cross that was headed home by sophomore Katelyn Wellnitz (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett Square), for her first collegiate goal.  Reed would finish with 13 saves in the loss.

Coming out for the start of the second half with a 3-0 lead, Arcadia kept on their offensive pace with a goal off a corner from sophomore Fatima Elmedkhar (Middletown, DE/Middletown) assisted by first year Alex Stoner (Elkton, MD/Elkton).  Sophomore Michelle Morgan (Philadelphia, PA/Girls High) served up a cross into sophomore Sara Volk-Perez (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) who drilled home the Knights fifth and final tally of the afternoon in the 81st minute.

The Knights controlled the game from start to finish, reeling off 28 shots, 18 on target, while one of the Griffin's 5 shots made its way into the gloves of starting keeper Jackie Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains Fanwood).

Arcadia moves on to face local non-conference rival Cabrini College this Saturday, Sept. 17 at home. Kick-off is scheduled for 12 Noon.
