Wilkes slips past Knights 1-0

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa.:  Despite outshooting their hosts 19-11 and outworking them 24-9 in drawing corner opportunities, Arcadia University Field Hockey was defeated 1-0 by Wilkes University in today's consolation game of the Wilkes University Colonel Classic.  Wilkes scored the game's only goal in the 55th minute and warded off a Knight's penalty corner with no time remaining in regulation.  Sarah Baumgardner made 5 saves in a well played game for the Knights' junior keeper.

After an early Arcadia goal was called back, the teams battled to a scoreless first half thanks to fine goalie play by both teams. The Knights created 14 second half corner situations, several of which occurred in the final minutes of action yet could not convert or solve Wilkes keeper Lindsey Davenport who finished with 12 stops.

With the game still scoreless in the second half, Arcadia sophomore Heather Buriak (Franklinville, NJ/Deisea Regional) wacked away a potential goal at the left side of the cage, earning credit for the defensive save. In the 55th minute, Wilkes game-winning goal came off a penalty corner at 55:39 where the initial shot went off of a Wilkes' stick to an open Ashley Ream. The sophomore then put it home past Baumgardner to seal the Lady Colonel victory.

With the win Wilkes goes to 1-1 on the season.  Arcadia drops to 0-3 on the year. The Knights will face Cedar Crest College on the road this Tues., Sept. 6 at 4 PM.
