Knights take it to Berkeley on the road

Box Score BRONX, N.Y.:  With the addition of four new team members since their last contest on Dec. 16, and the return of starting point guard Angie Adams '13 from injury, Arcadia University Women's Basketball packed a scoring-punch in tonight's 74-59 win against non-conference opponent Berkeley College played at Hostos Community College. 

First year transfer Victoria Roukas (Palisades Park, NJ/Immaculate Conception) a second-semester transfer from Division II Dominican College (NY) overcame early foul-trouble and led Arcadia with 20 points and 10 rebounds in her Knights debut. 

Junior Jackie Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) rejoined the team and put up Arcadia's other double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.  Adams (Elkins Park, PA/Abington Friends) finished with 11 points in her first game since Nov. 15.  Sophomore Jenna Crothers (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) went 5 for 9 from the field and finished with 15 points in 20 minutes. Crothers led the team with 4 steals and senior Christine Taylor (Navron, PA/Garden Spot) added 8 points and 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.

Sophomore Victoria Mazzeo (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy), a Division II second-semester transfer from neighboring Chestnut Hill College, contributed 4 points, 1 assist and 1 steal in her debut for Arcadia.

The Knights opened the game with a 6-0 run with Roukas netting all of them on a pair of jumpers in the paint and two free throws.  The Berkeley Knights clawed back to knot the score at 11 at 10:23 with a bucket form their leading scorer Taisha Sherman, who finished with 17 points. 

The lead changed hands four more times over the next 3 and half minutes until Arcadia's Jackie Law sank two free throws to put her Knights ahead 19-18 then went 4-4 at the line to stretch the Knight's lead to five, 23-18, with 4:27 left in the first half.  Arcadia would take a three-point lead into the locker room up 32-29.  In the first half, Arcadia's bench contributed 21 points, led by Crother's 11 first half points. 

Berkeley would force two more ties early in the second half, a 34-34 ball game with 17:58 to play before Arcadia responded with a monsterous 14-0 run over the next four minutes for a commanding 48-34 lead.  During that stretch, Arcadia went 8 for 10 at the free throw line, where they finished the game shooting 66.1% after 56 attempts. Arcadia maintained theri double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest, hitting a 19-point margin with 5:01 to play on a bucket from Taylor. 

The Knights were out-shot by Berkeley 34.3% to 31.6% from the floor however, Arcadia netted 37 points on their free shots and managed to out-rebound Berkeley 48-45. 

Arcadia (2-7 overall, 0-2 Commonwealth) hosts Eastern University this Saturday at the Kuch Center at 1 p.m.  Saturday's game is the first of a short, two-game home stand for Arcadia who also hosts New Jersey City University Monday evening at 6 p.m. before returning to Commonwealth play on Wed., Jan. 11 at Alvernia.
