Box Score Grantham, PA (November 2, 2012) - The Arcadia University Knights (15-6) had their 2012 season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion as they fell to the Messiah College Falcons (16-3) 3-2. The score was tied at 2-2 with less than 20-seconds to play, when the Falcons were awarded a penalty corner. The ball was passed around the arc until Natalie Ziegler found an opening and scored after time expired. The goal was scored more than four seconds after time ran out, but in field hockey if a penalty corner in awarded, it must be taken and the game continues until the officials determine the game is over. Messiah scoring ended the game. Messiah will now advance to the Commonwealth Conference finals. Lynn Beatty scored both Arcadia goals.
Arcadia jumped on the board first as Beatty converted off a penalty corner at 6:43 for a 1-0 Knight lead. Messiah tied the game at 13:24 as Juliana Hershey scored in front of the net off a pass from Heather Quirk. The Knights then took the lead back late in the half as Beatty scored her second, taking a shot that deflected off the goalie, giving Arcadia the 2-1 advantage at 34:14. The Knights went into the break with a 2-1 lead. Messiah outshot Arcadia 10-4 in the first half and had eight penalty corners to Arcadia's three.
Mia De Plato made four saves in the opening session.
Messiah quickly tied the game to start the second half as Julianna Hershey scored at 37:28. The rest of the half went scoreless until the final seconds when Ziegler scored off a pass from Kelly Martin after a penalty corner was awarded as time expired. The Falcons ended the game with a 17-5 shot advantage and a 16-3 penalty corner advantage. DePlato ended the game with seven saves.
