Knight's Ninth Inning Rally Halted by Mighty Macs

Box Score IMMACULATA, PA:  Arcadia University climbed back from a 6-2 hole, producing two runs and placing the tying run on the bags in the top of the ninth, but Immaculata's Joe Caria got the final out with two Knights on, for his first save of the season with the Mighty Macs winning today's non-conference ballgame 6-4.

Arcadia out-hit IU 9-8 and got another solid offensive outing from Pat Kwiatkowski getting the Knights on the board in the third on a triple, part of 2 for 5 day for the sophomore with 2 RBI and 1 scored.

The Knights countered from a 1 run deficit in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.  With Kwiatkowski waiting to be brought in from third after plating sophomore Brandon Martin, senior Mark Bowman belted a single to bring the go-ahead run across the dish.

The Mighty Macs answered with two in the home half, regaining a 3-2 lead.

Arcadia would be held hit-less until the seventh and went scoreless for five frames while Immaculata on the other hand posted three, one-run innings to take a 6-2 lead after eight.

With three outs to work with, and the Knights in the middle of their order, a lead-off walk from Jay Zehring, a Brian Innella base single and error on the Mighty Macs that placed Martin at first, quickly loaded the bases for the Scarlet & Grey.  Kwiatkowski sacrificed a ground out to second to bring home Zehring, leaving IU just a three-run cushion.  But the home team benefited from two quick Arcadia outs before the Knights were able to help themselves to another tally when Martin was brought home off a Justin Simpson single.

Down 6-4, senior Kyle Jackson, who entered in the sixth as a pinch runner, went down swinging in the game's final out and the Mighty Macs escaped with the two-run win.

IU's Aaron Dietrich lasted 8.0 innings in the win, allowing 8 hits and struck out 5 batters.  Caria entered for the final inning and only allowed one hit for the save.

Arcadia senior starter Adam Planamento was charged with 3 runs off 4 hits through three in the loss.

The Knights are pushing to jump back into the win column when they open their Commonwealth series against Lebanon Valley College this Friday at Erny Field.  First pitch for the single game is set for 3:30 p.m.
