Shoreman Pitch Knights a 6-2 Loss

Box Score
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.:  One day after pounding out 15 hits on their home field, Arcadia University was allowed just three by visiting Washington College in this afternoon's 6-2 non-conference loss at Erny Field.  Arcadia drops to 2-5 overall heading into their six-game Spring Break series which begins this Friday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Shoreman used 8 hits on the afternoon to go along with crafty pitching to improve to 4-1 overall.

John Rolewicz picked up his team-leading fifth extra-base hit off a triple to left center sparking the Shoreman bats in the first.  It scored the first of two Shoreman runs in the inning and preceded Tim Cottrell's RBI single to center.

With the Knights facing a 0-2 deficit to start the top of the order, leading hitter, junior Jerry Smith, stayed hot on the ball, squeaking a fair bounce down the left field line, but it would be the only hit Arcadia would generate in the inning.

In fact, Washington College's pitching would not allow another Knight's hit until the bottom of the fifth, a single from sophomore David Jacobs who was stranded at second when the inning ended and the Knights already facing a 5-0 deficit.

The Shoreman scored one in the second and got a big boost with a two-run homer from Shoreman leading hitter Ryan Normoyle in the third that pushed the visitors out to their five-run lead.

Washington College scored their final run in the top of the fifth after the Knights went to first year Steve Sciortino in relief of senior starter Steve Romond.  Cottrell opened the inning for the Shoreman with a bang, drilling a triple to right center and was brought home in the next at-bat by Nick Marinelli, producing his team-leading 5th RBI, and a 6-0 lead for the Shoreman.

The score remained unchanged into the bottom of the eighth inning, when the Knights registered their third and would be final hit of the contest.  The Knights remained aggressive putting two men on early in the frame, and an RBI single from sophomore Taylor Schon got the Knights on the board.  But a double play from the Shoreman, although allowing another Arcadia to run to score, tilted the deck to the defense and they quickly ended the inning two batters later holding onto a 6-2 lead that would stand as the final.

Starter Romond faced 17 batters and took the loss for the Knights, retiring after 5 earned runs on 5 hits, 3 walks and a strikeout.  Sciortino gave up a single hit and walked one through 2 innings. Arcadia senior Marc Gottfried entered in the top of the seventh for Sciortino, worked an inning with junior Jordan Hofferman and junior Tyler Guentter also seeing an inning apiece.  Gottfried allowed one hit and struck out two through four batters.  Hofferman allowed no hits and struck out one in three batters faced while Guentter allowed a hit and walked one through four faced.

Washington College starter Brian Lewis earned the win on a two-hitter through 6 frames with a walk and 6 strikeouts.

The Knights open spring break at the Cal Ripken Experience with a doubleheader against Penn State University-Harrisburg this Friday, March 9 at 3 p.m.   Game results for all spring break contests will be posted as they become available.
