Zehring Flirts with Cycle for Arcadia Baseball Against Wesley

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 10, 2012) – First baseman Jay Zehring '14 left nothing to the imagination at the dish in today's non-conference game versus Wesley College at Erny Field, falling just a double shy of hitting for the cycle to pace Arcadia University Baseball in the team's 12-7 loss to the visiting Wolverines.

Zehring finished 3-5 with 4 RBI and one scored using a run-scoring triple in the second to get his Knights on the board after Wesley erupted for an eight run top of two.  A three run shot over the left field fence comprised Arcadia's three-run sixth, which made the score 12-4 Wesley before the sophomore capped his day, belting a single through the left side in the ninth.

Wesley got a quick boost in the top of two, using a lead-off homer from Steve Perone, an RBI triple from Greg McKee followed by back-to-back run-scoring doubles for three more scores to open up a 5-0 lead.  Arcadia head coach Ken Spangenberg soon went to his bullpen to relieve starter Matt Dwyer '15 for Pat Kwiatkowski '15 but Wesley would add three more runs before the side retired with Arcadia facing an eight-run hole.

Zehring's triple pushed the Knight's first run across the board, however the Wolverines tacked on three in the top of five on four hits and one of AU's four errors on the day.  A one-run top of six gave Wesley a 12-1 lead.  Zehring's three-run bomb allowed Arcadia to creep back into the game, down 12-4 at the start of the seventh.

Jonah Van Bemmelen '15 crafted a two-hitter with no earned runs on 2 walks and 3 fanned through the sixth, seventh and eighth, holding Wesley at a dozen runs and Arcadia went to work on offense in the bottom of eight.

An RBI walk dealt to Brandon Martin '14 and a two-run single to right center off the bat of Taylor Schon '14  finished a three-run frame from AU.  The Knight's couldn't solve their 12-7 deficit despite a solid top of nine from AU's fourth pitcher, Zach Woods '15, with the Wolverines holding on to win by five.

Wesley (23-9, 8-7 CAC) starter Tommy Reaspsome worked six innings with 4 earned on 4 hits, 2 walks and a K.  Dwyer (0-1) was tagged with the loss after one and one-third and 6 earned on 5 hits, 3 walks and 2 K's.

Ready to snap their four game skid Arcadia (11-17, 5-7 CC) hosts non-conference opponent St. Joseph's College (NY) in a single game this Friday, April 13 at 4 p.m. The Knights then take on visiting John Jay College in a non-league twin-bill on Saturday, April 14 at Erny Field at 1 p.m.
