Baseball Back on Win Streak, Knocks off John Jay in Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 14, 2012) -  Arcadia University Baseball knocked off visiting John Jay College in today's non-conference doubleheader at Erny Field to extend their win streak to three.  The Knights pounded out 19 hits and scored 20 runs combined over today's games, winning the opener by an 8-1 count and taking the nightcap 12-8.

Steve Romond '12 notched the complete game one win while the game two victory went to Adam Planamento '12.  With three stolen bases on the day, Justin Simpson '14 knocked around 6 hits on 8 at-bats and scored 5 times with one RBI to pace the Knights Saturday afternoon.

Arcadia improves to 14-17 overall. John Jay drops to 12-17 on the season.

The Knights responded to an early first inning 1-0 lead for John Jay with a two-run third, two-run fifth and four-run sixth inning to take the opener behind Romond's first win on the mound (1-2) this season.

Arcadia made no errors in game one while John Jay racked up 3.  Jerry Smith '13 was hit three times at the plate, scoring twice while Simpson batted 3-4 with 3 runs scored and 2 stolen bags.  Brian Innela '13 finished 2-4 at the plate.  Romond held John Jay to just 1 earned on 5 hits a walk and 4 K's.

Game two remained scoreless until the bottom of three when the Knights pushed two runs across on RBI singles from Smith and Pat Kwiatkowski '14 before Arcadia erupted for a seven-run fourth.

An RBI double to left center from Nick Petroski '13 ignited Arcadia's fourth inning scoring.  It was followed by an RBI ground out from Brandon Martin '14, an RBI single to left from Simpson, an RBI walk to Sean Morris '12, and a three-run double to left center from Jay Zehring '14.

John Jay got on the board in the 5th but with the score 9-1 Arcadia, the visitors were never a threat to the Knights who kept the hits coming.  Zehring would crush a three-run shot over the center field fence putting the Knights up 12-1 to start the 7th and final inning. The Knights drew from their bullpen by committee over the final two and two-thirds innings with the most damage coming from John Jay's seven run seventh to help their loss become a respectable 12-8 cause.

Planamento (3-2) finished his one-hitter after four and one-third innings with 1 earned allowed on 4 walks and 2 K's.

Arcadia plays another non-league game this Wednesday, April 18 at nearby Penn State-Abington before returning to their Commonwealth Conference schedule where they are vying for a playoff spot with two three-game series against Messiah and Albright remaining.
