Towering Effort Against Lycoming Results in Season's First Commonwealth Win for Arcadia Women's Tennis

GLENSIDE, PA (April 14. 2012) -  Arcadia University Women's Tennis notched a mighty win at home on Saturday against visiting Lycoming College as the Commonwealth Conference match came down to a third-set tie breaker at No. 6 Singles with Arcadia's Latoya Fluker '14 dispatching Lycoming's Abbey Smith resulting in a 5-4 match decision for the Knights.

After being held from a win in their last three matches, all 4-5 causes, Arcadia put forth a towering effort and gave themselves a 2-1 lead after Doubles Competition concluded.

Beth Osipowitz '12 and Kaila Gaughan '15 needed extra time to defeat Lycoming's No. 1 doubles tandem Megan Gardner/Emily Zangara, 9-7.  Jasmine Peake and Viola Sawyer, Arcadia's No. 2 Doubles team, topped Lycoming's Shannon Sheridan/Kathy Jacobs 8-4. 

Winning two of three doubles matches proved to be decisive for Arcadia as each team took three wins out of singles action. 

Gaughan moves to 7-1 in singles play this spring, earning a win by default at No. 2 Singles over Zangara.  Peake who won her first set and went to a third-set tie breaker with Sheridan at No. 3 but lost 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.  Danielle Riggins '14 defeated Adriana Rivera 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5.  While at No. 6, Fluker won her first set 6-1, gave the second set to Lycoming's Abbey Smith 5-7 but battled back to defeat Smith in the tie-breaker 6-3 for Arcadia's first win on their Commonwealth schedule this season.

Lycoming drops to 2-5 (1-1 CC) while the Knights improve to 2-8 (1-2 CC).  It's conference play from here on out with the Knights traveling to Alvernia University on April 18 and Messiah College on April 21 before their season finale at home on April 28 against Elizabethtown.
