Arcadia Baseball Turns In Brilliant Comeback Performance at Penn State Abington

Box Score

ABINGTON, PA (April 18, 2012) - Facing a 9-1 deficit after four innings, Arcadia University was methodical about their onslaught-themed comeback, stacking 11 runs on top of their 8 run deficit in innings five and six alone, adding six more before game's end, sending utter disappointment into the dugout of host Penn State Abington as the Knights scratched the win column for the fourth straight time with today's 18-11 non-league victory over the Lions.

David Jacobs '13 earned 5 RBI and Justin Simpson '14 scored 4 runs to pace the Knights who improve to 15-17 overall.

A fielder's choice RBI on Jerry Smith '13 plated the Knight's first run in the top of the first but would be doubled by Penn State in the home half on a two-run fielder's choice.  The score remained 2-1 Lions until the bottom of the third when Penn State added four runs on four hits to take a 6-1 lead.  Penn State's lead grew to 9-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Arcadia was still without a hit until the bottom fell out for the host Lions in the top of the fifth.  The Knights would bat around their order and took full advantage of a series of misfirings from Lion's starter Pat Trymbiski before he was relieved of his duties near the end of the frame.  Run number one came via a bases loaded hit-by-pitch then Jacobs drilled a three-run double to left and the Knights would get two more unearned runs making it a one run ballgame with the Lions clinging to a 9-8 advantage.

Although Penn State would get two back in the home half of the fifth, the Knights stayed the course and finally were able to get the lead with a four-run top of the sixth.  Another RBI from Jacobs on a ground-out started the scoring, while Mark Bowman '12 was dealt a bases loaded RBI walk.  Kyle Jackson '12, who stole three bases on the day, connected for a a two-run single that pushed Arcadia out to a 12-11 lead.

Tyler Guentter '13 entered in the bottom of the fourth, had settled in by the sixth frame and was flawless through his remaining time on the mound and finished as the winning pitcher of record with 2 earned off 5 hits, 2 walks while striking out 4 in his first victory for Arcadia.

Behind Guentter's stellar performance on the hill, Arcadia continued to put runs up on the board, with a one-run seventh, three-run eighth and two-run ninth.

Jackson, who was dealt 3 walks, finished 2-3 with 2 RBI and 3 scored.  Jacobs went 2-5 with 5 RBI and 2 scored, Pat Kwiatkowski '13 delivered a 3-6 showing at the dish with 1 RBI and 1 scored while Mike McElhatton '12 batted 2-3 with 1 RBI and 1 scored.

On the horizon for Arcadia is their first of two remaining Commonwealth Conference series, with Messiah College visiting Erny Field this Friday for game one. First pitch will be thrown out at 3:30 pm.  The series doubleheader will be played in Grantham, PA on Saturday with a 12 Noon start time.
