Offense Hits Lull at Widener, Arcadia Baseball Drops Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHESTER, PA:  Over the past ten games, Arcadia University Baseball has pounded out over 100 hits and scored 58 runs but had trouble generating their high-octane offense this afternoon at Widener University as the Pride defeated the Knights 4-1 in the opener and used a no-hitter from Rick Kazigian in the nightcap to take a 4-0 victory and the Commonwealth Conference series three games to zero.

For the third game in a row and eighth on the books this season, Arcadia put up a score during their first at-bat showing the determination expected of the 2012 team.  Justin Simpson '14 (1-3, 1 run) delivered a two-out single to the mound and would be brought home when a Jay Zehring '14 double to centerfield was bobbled by the Widener shortstop.

Widener answered with a one-run bottom of one off an RBI single to left to lock the score at 1-1.  The Knights would connect for just two more hits the rest of the way as the score remained deadlocked at 1's until the bottom of the sixth when the Pride scored 3 runs off 3 hits to take a 4-1 lead.

Arcadia had the heart of their order up for the top of seven but flew out to center and right with a ground-out to second that ended their chances.

Steve Romond '12 got the start for the Knights, working 4.1 innings with 1 earned off 4 hits, 5 walks and 3 K's.  Tyler Guentter '13 would be the losing pitcher of record though 1.0 inning worked and 2 earned off a hit and walk.

The game two nod went to Jordan Hofferman '13 entering his fifth start with an unblemished record as one of the league's top-two pitchers but despite delivering a solid performance through 27 batters faced, he would take his first loss of the season (4-1).

The Pride out-hit the Knights 6-0 highlighted by starter Rick Kazigian's (4-2) no-no to complete the series sweep.  The Pride did all their scoring in the first three innings putting up one in the bottom of one, two in the second and one in the third.  Hofferman finished with 3 earned off 6 hits, 3 walks and a strikeout.

With the final two games between league leader Alvernia and Albright to be played out on Monday, Arcadia (11-16, 5-7 CC) remains in contention for fifth place overall in the league standings.  Widener  (17-11, 7-5 CC) jumps to second overall.

The Knights open a five-game home-stand this Tuesday, hosting Wesley College in non-league action at Erny Field.  First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.  Arcadia returns to its' league schedule on April 20 hosting Messiah College.
