Timely Hitting and Great Pitching Get Baseball Win in Home Opener

Box Score Cheltenham, PA (March 1, 2013) - The Arcadia University Knights (1-1) won their home opener this afternoon, defeating the Swarthmore College Garnet (0-1), 7-1. The Knights jumped out to a quick lead scoring three in the first and the pitching did the rest. Three Knights (Brandon Martin, Mike Nessel and George Pagan) each had two hits and the four Arcadia pitchers scattered six hits.

Arcadia started the game quickly with a three spot in the first. Martin hit into a fielder's choice that plated Justin Simpson on a Swarthmore error. Jay Zehring and Taylor Schon then hit back-to-back RBI doubles for a 3-0 lead.

The Knights then scored two runs on a throwing error by Swarthmore in the fourth. They got two more in the frame on an RBI double by Jerry Smith and an RBI single by Martin. Swarthmore scored their lone run in the eighth.

Martin was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Nessel was 2-2 with a run scored and Pagan was 2-4 with a run scored. Jason Goldberg started the game and pitched four shutout innings, allowing four hits. Jordan Hofferman, who earned the win, pitched three innings and allowed no hits, while striking out a pair. Jonah von Bemmelen and Tyler Guentter each pitched an inning of relief for the Knights.

Arcadia gets right back on the field tomorrow as they host Delaware Valley for a DH that will start at 12pm at Erny Field.
