Baseball Defeats Delaware Valley in Extra Innings

Box Score Cheltenham, PA (March 2, 2013) - Brandon Martin hit a slow roller to the pitcher that scored Justin Simpson with no outs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Arcadia University Knights (2-2) a 4-3 extra innings win over the Delaware Valley College Aggies (1-1). The win gave the Knights a split of the doubleheader with Del Val.

Arcadia scored the first run of the game in the second as Brandon Martin hit an RBI single to score Justin Simpson. The Knights then added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Nick Petroski. They added a third run in the seventh on an error as Pagan scored. Delaware Valley then scored three in the seventh, two unearned to tie the game. Arcadia failed to score in the bottom of the seventh and the game went to extra innings.

After a scoreless top of the eighth, the Knights loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with no outs. Delaware Valley brought in the center fielder to be used as a fifth infielder, but it didn't matter. Martin hit a slow grounder to the pitcher and his throw to the plate to try to cut off the winning run was late as the Knights came away with a 4-3 win.

The Knights had just two hits in the game, but used two Aggie errors to help their cause. Mark Gottfried pitched six innings of brilliant baseball, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out five. Cody Tsevdos earned the win after pitching a scoreless eighth.

Arcadia is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday for a 3pm first-pitch against Centenary.
