West Lawn, PA (May 2, 2013) - Elliott Freeman hit a two run double in the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and give the Arcadia University Knights (22-17-1) an eventual 6-3 win over the Stevenson University Mustangs (24-17) in their first game of the 2013 MAC Commonwealth Baseball Championships.
Jason Goldberg pitched a complete game, allowing three runs, on 12 hits with seven strikeouts.
Arcadia will now move on to face top-seeded Alvernia tomorrow at 3pm with the winner advancing to the to championship round on Saturday. This is the first time that Arcadia has won their opening game in a MAC Tournament. They dropped the opener and won their second game in the 2008 Championships.
Stevenson got on the board first with a two out run in the bottom of the first. Arcadia then tied the game in the top of the second as
Jay Zehring hit a two out RBI single to score
George Pagan. The Knights then took the lead in the fourth, scoring two unearned runs on an RBI single by Pagan and an RBI single by Zehring,
Stevenson tied the game in the sixth scoring a pair of runs, but the Knights jumped right back in front with two runs in the seventh. Arcadia had three straight hits to start the inning as
David Jacobs singled,
Justin Simpson had a bunt single and
Elliott Freeman hit a two run double to the right center field gap that scored Jacobs and Simpson for a 5-3 Arcadia lead. The Knights added an insurance run in the ninth as Pagan hit an RBI double for a 6-3 Arcadia lead and the win.
Simpson went 3-4 with three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. Pagan was 2-5 with a run scored and two RBI, while Zehring was 2-5 with two RBI. Jacobs was also 2-5 with a run scored.
