Men’s Basketball Can’t Hang on at Hood in 68-66 Conference Loss

Box Score FREDERICK, Md. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team dropped a 68-66 Commonwealth Conference contest at Hood College Saturday afternoon, dropping its record to 6-7 overall and 1-5 in conference play. The Blazers improved to 9-4 overall and evened their conference record at 3-3 for the season.
 
Junior guard Aaron Lee-Webb (Norristown, Pa.) scored a game-high 15 points with five rebounds and three assists to lead the Knights, but also had critical turnover in closing seconds as Arcadia attempted to tie or win the game.  Junior forward Joe Brown (Philadelphia, Pa.) had 13 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for his third double-double in four games. It was his fifth double-double of the season.
 
Junior guard Travis Saltus (Teaneck, N.J.) also scored 13 points to go with five stelas and three assists. Junior center Jose Figueroa (Philadelphia, Pa.) also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.
 
Senior guards Justin Bowens (Frederick, Md.) and Cameron Cook (Baltimore, Md.), and junior guard Chris Brown (Mechanicsville, Pa.) scored 12 points each to lead Hood to the win. Cameron Cook pulled down a team-best eight rebounds, while Bowens handed out three assists.
 
Arcadia looked as though it might run away with the game early, opening the contest with a 17-4 run over the firth four minutes and went on to lead 39-31 at the break.
 
The Knights led 55-45 following a 1-for-2 showing at the line from Figueroa with 8:20 to go in the second before the Blazers used a 13-3 run that was capped by two free throws from Bowens to knot the score at 58 three minutes later.
 
Chris Cook drained a three to give Hood its first lead of the game, 64-63 with 2:55 to go, but Lee-Webb put the Knights back on top by making a pair of free throws one minute after. Cameron Cook then tipped in a missed layup attempt by Reggie Daniels (Abingdon, Md.) with 1:32 left to put the Blazers ahead for good.
 
Figueroa brought Arcadia back within one with a free throw with 1:03 left, but he missed the second giving Hood a 67-66 lead. Cameron Cook then missed a layup at the other end and sophomore guard John Landro (Conwall on Hudson, N.Y.) grabbed the rebound, giving the Knights the ball with 31 seconds to go.
 
Lee-Webb then lost the ball with four seconds to go and Chris Cook came up with it. He was immediately fouled by Landro and went 1-for-2 at the line for the 68-66 final. The Knights got the ball back with two seconds left, but couldn't get a shot off before time expired.
 
Arcadia will look to bounce back Wednesday when it hosts an 8 p.m. Commonwealth Conference contest against Elizabethtown College at Alumni Gymnasium.
