Mazzeo Lays In Game Winner In Closing Seconds to Beat Hood, 59-57

Box Score FREDERICK, Md. – Senior guard/forward Victoria Mazzeo (Langhorne, Pa.) dropped in the game-winning layup with two seconds left on the clock to give the Arcadia University women's basketball team a 59-57 Commonwealth Conference victory at Hood College Saturday afternoon.

The Knights improved to 7-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while also snapping a four-game losing streak. The Blazers fell to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in conference play with the loss.

That was just the second made basket of the day for Mazzeo, who knocked down a jumper eight minutes into the game that cut an early Arcadia deficit to 14-12. She finished the day with a team-best eight rebounds for the Knights.

Sophomore guard Samantha Caligiuri (West Grove, Pa. ) scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field to lead Arcadia, while fellow sophomore guard Dominique Hassinger (Franklinville, N.J.) netted 10 points with three assists. Sophomore forward Valerie DiMuro (Tappan, N.J.)  added 11 points and pulled down six rebounds.

Freshman guard Danni Medovich (Woodsboro, Md.) scored 14 points to lead the Blazers, while junior forward Rachel Wiley (Frederick, Md.) posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.  Freshman forward Brittney George (Middletown, Md.) chipped in with eight points.

Hood held a narrow 23-21 lead with just under seven minutes to go following a made free throw from freshman guard Eboni Staples (Laurel, Md.). Caligiuri answered with a layup at the other end to tie the game and start an 11-2 run for the Knights to close the first half, giving them a 32-25 lead at the intermission.

Arcadia never trailed again in the game and led by as many as 10 points, 41-31, in the early stages of the second half. The Knights held a 53-45 advantage following Hassinger's layup with 3:32 to go, but the Blazers rallied in the closing minutes and tied the game at 57 on a three from Medovich with 27 seconds left in the contest.

Caligiuri was fouled by freshman forward Jessy Burke (Monrovia, Md.) on the ensuing possession and stepped to the free throw line with a chance to give Arcadia the lead, but neither attempt would fall and Wiley grabbed the rebound off the second miss with 11 seconds to go. Medovich then turned the ball over with seven seconds to go and the Knights called a timeout with seven second left to draw up the last play of the game. The ball then found its way to Mazzeo, who made her second basket of the game to give Arcadia the win.

Free throw shooting did play a significant role in the outcome of the game. The Knights were 16-for-27 at the line, while the Blazers were just 5-of-15. Arcadia had a 30-24 scoring advantage in the paint, while Hood had the edge in fast break (9-2) and second-chance (10-1) scoring.

The Knights will be back in action Wednesday when they host 6 p.m. Commonwealth Conference contest against Elizabethtown College at Alumni Gymnasium.
