Women’s Basketball Wins Overtime Thriller over Albright, 66-64

Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's basketball team pulled out a wild 66-64 overtime victory over visiting Albright College Wednesday night at Alumni Gymnasium to even its record at 9-9 overall and improve to 3-8 in conference play.  The Lions fell to 11-7 overall and 5-6 in conference play with the loss.

Sophomore guard Samantha Caligiuri (West Grove, Pa.) gave the Knights the lead for good when she knocked down a jumper with 42 seconds to go in the extra frame to break 61-61 tie, and fellow sophomore guard Maureen Fiocca (Philadelphia, Pa.) made it a four-point game after knocking down a pair of free throws with 23.6 seconds left in the game, giving Arcadia a 65-61 lead.

Junior guard Amanda Tiritilli (Fairfield, N.J.) brought Albright back within one by draining a three from the right wing with 11.2 seconds remaining, and Caligiuri was immediately fouled on the inbounding play that followed. She made the first free throw, but missed the second, putting the Knights up two, 66-64.

Senior forward Shawn Barczynski (Mohnton, Pa.) controlled the rebound for the Lions after the missed free throw and the ball went to Tiritilli for an attempt at the game-winning three from in front of her bench. Senior Victoria Mazzeo (Langhorne, Pa.) then came up with what was arguably the defensive play of the game as she blocked the initial attempt. The ball went right back to Tiritilli, but her desperation attempt from the corner was well short, giving Arcadia the win.

The Knights led for all but the final minute of the second half and were up by 10 after Mazzeo drained two free throws to give Arcadia a 54-44 lead with 4:02 left in regulation. The Lions gradually chipped away at that lead and tied the game at 57 on Tiritilli's three with 27 seconds to go in the second half. Both teams had a chance to take the lead before time expired in the period, but Mazzeo missed two free throws for the Knights and freshman guard Shannon Thomas (Dallastown, Pa.) missed a layup for Albright, sending the game to overtime.

Sophomore forward Valerie DiMuro (Tappan, N.Y.) posted a double-double with game-high totals of 18 points and 14 rebounds for Arcadia, while Caligiuri finished with 17 points and a game-high five steals. Sophomore forward Rachel Jacob (Churchville, Pa.) had a huge game off the bench, scoring 12 point on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Mazzeo filled the box score with six points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Thomas finished the game with 11 points for the Lions, while senior forward Megan Boyle (Monson, Mass.) fell just shy of a double-double with 10 points and eight boards. Senior guard Kristi McFadden and Tiritilli finished with nine points each.

Arcadia had a clear game plan to attack the basket and it showed as the Knights went 23-of-33 at the line, while Albright was 7-of-13 at the line. The Lions collected 13 offensive rebounds and converted them into 14 points, while Arcadia had just three points off its seven offensive boards.

The Knights shot 41 percent (20-49) from the field and were 3-of-8 from three, while Albright shot 43 percent (26-61) from the field and was 5-of-12 from downtown.

Arcadia will return to action Saturday when it hosts a 1 p.m. Commonwealth Conference contest against Hood College at Alumni Gymnasium.
