GLENSIDE, Pa. – Four Arcadia University men's basketball players scored in double figures Saturday night at Alumni Gymnasium, as the Knights shot a scorching 55.6 percent (20-for-36) in the first half en route to an 85-67 victory over visiting Ursinus College in the first day of the Centennial-MAC Challenge.
Senior guard
Travis Saltus scored 12 of his team-best 14 points in the opening frame for Arcadia (1-0), while
Sean Mayberry tacked on 13 markers off the bench on 6-for-10 shooting in his collegiate debut. Seniors
Joe Brown (team-high five steals) and
Torrell Candelaria registered 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The visiting Bears (0-1) received 16 points from Malik Draper on 8-for-16 shooting, while Matt Knowles added 15.
Arcadia never trailed, and used nine unanswered points to take an 18-6 advantage 5:40 into the in the game. The Knights held a 26-8 advantage in points off turnovers in the stanza, en route to a 51-34 halftime lead.
The Arcadia edge never got below 14 in the second half, and got as high as 24 on a pair of occasions with less than eight minutes to go.
AU took care of the basketball throughout the night, as head coach
Justin Scott's side only turned the ball over on eight occasions.
In the opening contest of the Challenge, Muhlenberg College scored an 80-77 triumph over Albright College. Jon Schreer and Malique Killing scored 22 points apiece for the victors, while Omari Ringgold and Evan Ward each poured in 14 for the Lions.
Day two of the Challenge will take place at Ursinus in Collegeville, Pa. Play gets underway at 1 p.m. with Muhlenberg squaring off with Arcadia, while Albright and Ursinus tip off at 3 p.m.
