Travis Saltus tossed in a desperation three from two steps beyond half court to give the Arcadia University men's basketball team a miraculous 82-81 Commonwealth Conference victory at Hood College Saturday.
The Knights improved to 2-2 for the season, while the Blazers fell to 1-2. It was the first conference game of the season for both teams.
Hood led for almost the entire extra period as was up 79-77 after Reggie Daniels sank the first of two free throws with 25 seconds on the clock. Daniels would miss the second, and Saltus was fouled as he drove to the basket on the ensuing trip down the floor. Saltus then drained both free throws to tie the score at 79 with 19 seconds to go.
Senior guard Chris Cook then sprinted to the basket and laid the ball in to give the Blazers an 81-79 lead with just three seconds on the clock. Arcadia inbounded the ball to Saltus, who caught the ball just outside the top-right of the Knights defensive three-point arc and had just enough time to turn and take three steps before getting off the desperation attempt. The shot was from some 55 feet away and caught nothing but the bottom of the net to give the Knights the thrilling victory.
Saltus scored nine of his team-leading 21 points in the overtime period. He was 6 of 14 from the field with two threes and was a perfect 8 of 8 from the line. Senior forward
Joe Brown netted 16 points to go with eight rebounds, and with his 10th point of the game became the fourth player in the NCAA Division III era of the program to score 1,000 points.
Senior guard
Torrell Candelaria fell one rebound short of a double-double after scoring 14 points with nine boards. Junior guard
John Landro also scored in double figures with 12 points.
Cook finished with a game-high 27 points on 8 of 17 shooting from the field and an 11 for 12 performance at the line to lead Hood. Senior guard/forward Terell Buyck finished with 20 point on 6 of 14 shooting from the floor with four threes, and was 4 for 5 at the stripe.
It was a tight game the entire way. The Knights led 36-32 at the half after Landro drained a three-ball as time expired in the opening frame, and led by as many as seven in the second half after brown laid the ball in to cap a 10-2 run that gave Arcadia a 62-55 lead with 7:16 on the clock.
Hood then ran of seven straight and tied the game at 62 on Cook's layup with five minutes to go in regulation. The lead changed hands on multiple occasions from there and the Blazer took a 71-69 lead with 1:01 left after junior guard Davon Hill knocked down a jumper. Brown answered for Arcadia by sinking a jumper of his own with 35 seconds to go, knotting the score at 71.
Cook then missed an attempt at a game-winning three and the ball went out of bounds off one of the Knights with just three-tenths of a second left in regulation. The Blazers then called a timeout to setup a play, but the lop attempt at the basket was picked off by Brown to end the second half.
Arcadia shot 42 percent (28-67) from the field and 35 percent (10-29) from beyond the arc, and was a perfect 18 for 18 at the free throw line in the win. Hood shot 46 percent (26-57) from the floor, 38 percent (8-21) from three and 81 percent (21-26) from the line.
The Knight will next travel to Penn State-Abington Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
