Second half rally leads William Paterson past men’s basketball, 77-75

GLENSIDE, Pa. - William Paterson University outscored Arcadia University men's basketball 50-31 in the second half to defeat the Knights 77-75 on Sunday evening at Alumni Gymnasium. Arcadia fell to 3-3 with the loss, while the Pioneers improved to 4-1 with the win.

The Knights started the game on a 10-0 run before William Paterson senior guard Sandy Burgos converted a layup to get the Pioneers on the board.  Arcadia then went on a 24-12 run to open its largest lead of the first half at 34-14 with 4:47 left on the clock. The Knights finished the first half with a 44-27 lead.

Arcadia scored 13 of the first 21 points in the second half to obtain its biggest lead of the game at 22 points, going up 57-35 following a good three-pointer by junior guard John Landro with 16:12 on the clock. William Paterson followed that up with a 35-12 run, getting its first lead of the game at 70-69 with 3:11 left on the clock. The Pioneers then made five of their final six free throws for the 77-75 win.

The Knights were led by senior guard Travis Saltus, who had a team-high 20 points, with seven assists, and five rebounds. Landro scored 19 points on 5-6 shooting from three-point range with three rebounds. Senior guard Torrell Candelaria scored 10 points with three assists, and senior guard Joe Brown added 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists in the game.

William Paterson was led by Burgos, who had a game-high 21 points, and senior guard Jaques Conceicao, who scored 14 points. Sophomore guard Turrell McClendon added 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while sophomore forward Nick Smith added 13 points and eight rebounds, both off the bench.

The Knights return to action Wednesday when they host Alvernia University for an 8 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game at Alumni Gymnasium.
