Men’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker in Overtime to Hood, 93-88

Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team closed the second half with a 13-3 run to force overtime, but in the end dropped a 93-88 Commonwealth Conference contest to visiting Hood College Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.
 
The Blazers improved to 15-4 overall and 9-3 in conference play with the win, while the Knights fell to 7-12 overall and 2-10 on league play with the loss.
 
Arcadia trailed by three after Davon Hill went 1-for-2 at the line with eight seconds to give Hood a 91-88 lead. Hill then stole the ball in his own defensive end from junior guard Torrell Candelaria (Philadelphia, Pa.) near the three-point line, and made both free throws after being fouled with one second on the clock to seal the win for the Blazers.
 
The Knights trailed from the onset as Hood opened the contest with a 9-2 run and were down 42-36 at the break. Arcadia used a 15-3 run in the early stages of the second half to take a 54-51 lead seven minutes in and were up three after senior guard Rashon Brock's (Buena, N.J.) dunk put the Knights up 56-53 with 11:25 to go in regulation. Hill drained a three just over a minute later and Arcadia never held the lead again.
 
The game was tied at 65 following a pair of made free throws from junior center Jose Figueroa (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 5:50 to go in the second half before the Blazers used a 10-point run to open a 75-65 lead with 3:33 left in the frame. Arcadia then came storming back with a 13-3 run and tied the game on Candelaria's three from well beyond the three-point line with 1.2 seconds left in the second period.
 
Sophomore guard John Landro (Corwall on Hudson, N.Y.) poured in a game-high 24 points coming off the bench for the Knights, going 7-of-11 from the field and 5-of-11 from thee, while junior forward Joe Brown (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted 14 points with seven boards and four assists. Brock finished with 12 points, six boards, four steals and two assists, and Candelaria ended the night with 10 points.
 
Senior guard Cameron Cook (Baltimore, Md.) scored 23 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead Hood to the win, while Hill was right behind with 21 points, five assists and three steals off the bench. Junior guard Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va.) netted 18 points with six assists, three rebounds and two steals.
 
The Knights fell despite owning the advantage in bench scoring (46-27), points in the paint (34-26) and second chance scoring (12-9). Hood had a 23-15 edge in point off turnovers.
 
Arcadia will next travel to Elizabethtown College Wednesday for an 8 p.m. Commonwealth Conference contest.
