Box Score GLENDSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's basketball team closed the door on the 2013-14 season with a 90-65 Commonwealth Conference loss to visiting Widener University Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Pride closed the season with an overall record of 14-11 and a conference mark of 9-9, while the Knights ended the year at 10-15 overall and 4-14 in conference play following their sixth straight setback.
Arcadia senior guard/forward
Victoria Mazzeo (Langhorne, Pa.) just missed a triple-double in the final game of her collegiate career to lead the Knights, scoring 13 points with 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Sophomore guard
Maureen Fiocca (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 14 points, while fellow sophomore guard
Samantha Caligiuri (West Grove, Pa.) netted 10 points with three assists. Sophomore
Dominique Hassinger (Franklinville, N.J.) also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Senior guard Jen Egee (Ridley Park, Pa.) scored a game-high 33 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field and a 12-for-13 performance at the free throw line to lead Widener to the win. She also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds. Fellow senior guard Joanna Persiano (Ventnor, N.J.) netted 19 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field while dishing out five assists.
The Pride shot 47 percent (32-68) from the field and 57 percent (8-14) from beyond the arc while going 18-of-21 at the line to secure the win. Arcadia shot just 37 percent (23-63) from the field and 56 percent (19-34) from the line while going 0-for-10 from three.
It was a tight game for most of the first half, with the Pride holding a slim one-point lead, 23-22, with nine minutes to go in the opening period. Widener took the game over from there however, closing the first half with a 23-5 surge that gave the Pride a 46-28 lead at the break.
The Knights used a 12-1 run midway through the second half to pull back within 12 with just under nine minutes left in the game after Mazzeo's layup made it 64-52, but Widener responded with an 11-4 burst that put the Pride up by 21 with 6:12 left and they led by at least 20 the rest of the way.
