Baseball team runs away from Elizabethtown for 12-3 win

Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Arcadia University baseball team scored nine unanswered runs in the final four innings to break a 3-3 tie and record a 12-3 Commonwealth Conference victory over Elizabethtown College Thursday afternoon at Erny Field.

The Knights improved to 2-6 for the season, while the Blue Jays fell to 6-5. It was the first conference game of the year for both teams.

Up through the end of the fifth inning, the game was tied 3-3 until the Knights took control of the game and exploded for nine runs over the next four innings to put the game out of reach.

In the sixth, sophomore George Pagan (Old Bridge, N.J.) led the inning off with a double and then scored the go-ahead run by way of a single from senior Taylor Schon (Scotch Plains, N.J.).

The Knights carried that momentum into the seventh inning when singles by seniors Elliott Freeman (Bangor, Pa.) and Jay Zehring (Manassas, Va.) and a two-out walk by Pagan loaded the bases. Sophomore Michael Nessel (Stuart, Fla.) then put the game out of reach after blasting a clutch two-out double to center field to clear the bases and put the Knights up by four.

Arcadia continued to push down on the throttle in the eighth by starting off the inning with three straight singles by Schon, junior Andonis Yiantsos (Voorhees, N.J.), and senior David Jacobs (Havre de Grace, Md.) to load the bases once again with no outs. Freeman was able to score Schon by route of a fielder's choice and then a sacrifice fly by sophomore Connor Arsenault (Medford, N.J.) in the next at-bat plated Yiantsos to give the Knights a 9-3 lead.

The Knights were able to again get the bases loaded for the third straight inning in the final frame. Freshman Justin Chasmar (Barnegat, N.J.) led off the inning with a single to right and a couple of batters later, Yiantsos produced a walk to get runners on first and second. From there, Arcadia pounded four straight singles from Jacobs, Freeman, Arsenault, and Zehring to put up another three runs and all but put the game out of reach for Elizabethtown. The Knights had bases loaded with one out but failed to put across anymore to end the inning.

Every batter in the lineup for Arcadia had at least one hit and seven out of the nine had multiple hits on the day.

Nessel went 3-for-6 with a solo homerun, a double, four RBIs, and a run scored.

Freeman, Arsenault, and Zehring each had two RBIs in the game while going a combined 9-for-17 at the plate and crossing home a combined four times.

Earning the victory for the Knights on the hill was junior Kyle Farnholtz (Northampton, Pa.). Farnholtz tossed six innings, including seven hits, four walks, two strikeouts, and gave up three runs (two earned). The win picked up his first win on the season and moved his record to 1-0.

The bullpen of freshman Connor Travis (Berlin, N.J.) and senior Robert Worrell (West Chester, Pa.) was all but perfect in the final three innings, only giving up one hit and no walks, to go along with a strikeout each.

For the Blue Jays, sophomore starter Nick Gulla (Lansdale, Pa.) suffered the loss on the mound despite going six innings and leaving the game with only a one run deficit. In those six innings, Gulla gave up nine hits, two walks, two strikeouts, and four runs (two earned). Freshman Josh Kwak (Ringwood, N.J.) entered the game in the seventh and the Knights proved to be too much for him, surrendering 12 hits, two walks, and eight runs.

The Knights will be back in action tomorrow at Erny Field at 3:30 p.m. where they will take on visiting Widerner University.
