Errors Plague Baseball Team in Sweep by Widener 5-2 and 7-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHESTER, Pa. – The Arcadia University baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader against Widener University 5-2 and 7-0. The Knights struggled defensively, committing nine errors between both games. With the losses, Arcadia falls to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in the Commonwealth Conference while Widener improves to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the Commonwealth.

For the Knights, senior Taylor Schon (Scotch Plains, N.J.) went 2-for-6 on the day with a double and a run scored.

Sophomore George Pagan (Old Bridge, N.J.) also added three hits on the day after going 3-for-6.

Arcadia will look to get back on track tomorrow when they visit Elizabethtown for a conference doubleheader starting at noon. Previously on Thursday, the Knights defeated the Blue Jays 12-3 in both of the teams' first conference game of the year.

Game 1: Arcadia 2, Widener 5

Arcadia did have an early chance in the second inning to build momentum in the game when the Knights were able to get bases loaded with only one out. Two hits from Pagan and freshman Justin Chasmar (Barnegat, N.J.) and a hit by pitch from sophomore Michael Nessel (Stuart, Fla.) were able to load the bases. However, a timely double play ended the threat.

The Knights were able to strike first in the contest in the very next inning after getting the bases loaded once again. Senior David Jacobs (Havre de Grace, Md.) hit a one-out single down the right field line and thanks to an error from the third baseman, senior Elliott Freeman (Bangor, Pa.) was able to make it first and second. Sophomore Connor Arsenault (Medford, N.J.) was then able to load the bases with a single and Senior Jay Zehring (Manassas, Va.) pushed across the first run of the game after a fielder's choice.

In the bottom half of the inning, an error led off the inning and proved to hurt Arcadia as the Knights should have been out of the inning, but a three run homerun from junior Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) pushed across three unearned runs for the Pride.

In each of the fourth and sixth innings, Widener added an unearned run because of an error to give the Pride a 5-1 lead.

The Knights started a comeback in the seventh inning after Schon and freshman Robert Roth (Freehold, N.J.) led off the inning with a double each and Roth was able to score Schon from second. But, Widener made a pitching change and the Knights fell in order to close out the game.

Freshman John Lloyd (Reading, Pa.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Knights after surrendering all five runs (none earned) on seven hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. The loss moves his record to 1-1.

For the Pride, senior Colin Weiss (Red Hill, Pa.) pitched six innings to pick up his first win of the year after giving up two runs on eight hits, no walks, and five strikeouts. Senior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned his second save of the year after entering the game and retiring the Knights in order.

Game 2: Arcadia 0, Widener 7

Multiple defensive miscues from the Knights throughout the game proved once again to hurt Arcadia. The Pride scored their first run of the game in the second inning after a run was able to score because of an error.

On the mound for the Knights was Nessel and he was able to hold Widener down throughout the game up until the sixth inning when three defensive lapses in the inning extended the inning and sent six runs across the plate for the Pride.

The Knights struggled to string together anything offensively and were held to only five hits in the ballgame. In the sixth inning, the Knights were able to load the bases with only one out but failed to score after a double play ended the inning.

Nessel took the loss for the Knights on the hill, which dropped his record to 0-2, after giving up six runs (two earned) on five hits, five walks, and three strikeouts in his 5.1 innings of work.

Sophomore Joe Santone (Blackwood, N.J.) picked up the victory for the Pride after throwing 5.1 shutout innings and only surrendering five hits and a walk to go along with three strikeouts. Sophomore Kevin Scisorek (Hillsborough, N.J.) earned his first save of the year after entering a 1-0 ballgame and inducing an inning-ending double play followed by closing out the game.
