Box Score ASTON, Pa. – The Arcadia University baseball team scored three times in the top of the ninth to cap off a 7-5 come-from-behind victory at Neumann University Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest. Arcadia improved to 9-25-1 with the win and Neumann fell to 14-19 with the loss.
Neumann got out to an early 5-0 lead after the first three innings, but would be stranded at five for the rest of the contest. The Neumann Knights were retired in order to start off the game, but took advantage of a fielding error in the second to put a run across and then a first-and-third bunt scored the runner from third to make it 2-0.
They would get their last three runs of the game in their vey next at-bats in the third inning after two walks, a fielder's choice, followed by another walk loaded the bases and senior Drew Snow (Media, Pa.) singled down the line to score two and because of an error, it allowed sophomore Kelvin Ortiz (Bristol, Pa.) to score all the way from first to give Neumann an early five-run advantage.
The Arcadia Knights rebounded in the fifth inning, putting up four runs of their own, all with two outs, and cutting the deficit to only one.
Two consecutive singles from senior
Justin Simpson (Centreville, Va.) and junior
Ryan Sassaman (Reading, Pa.) led off the inning and then junior
Andonis Yiantsos (Voorhees, N.J.) drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Senior
Elliott Freeman (Bangor, Pa.) recorded his team-leading 20th RBI in the next at-bat after a single plated Simpson. Sassaman came around to score on an error from the catcher and then sophomore
Connor Arsenault (Medford, N.J) singled to reload the bases which gave way to freshman
Justin Chasmar (Barnegat, N.J.), who belted Arcadia's third single in a row to right center to score Freeman and Yiantsos.
Arcadia would not record a hit after the fifth inning until the ninth inning when the Knights rallied to overcome the one-run deficit and take a two-run lead. Arcadia loaded the bases once again and Arsenault tied up the game with an RBI groundout. Chasmar and sophomore
Michael Nessel (Stuart, Fla.) both came up clutch in the next two at-bats, each smashing RBI-singles to give Arcadia its first lead of the game.
Sophomore
Brian Emerson (Forked River, N.J.) gave up a leadoff single to Neumann in the bottom half, but proceeded to retire the next three in order, including two strikeouts, to earn his first collegiate save of his career.
Sophomore starter
Joseph Warren (Yardley, Pa.) was let off the hook of a loss after starting the first 6.1 innings and surrendering five runs on five hits and three walks in a no-decision. Senior
Robert Worrell (West Chester, Pa.) was once again spot-on in relief, tossing 1.2 innings and just allowing just one hit and a walk to pick up his second win of the year after being the pitcher of record when Arcadia took the lead.
Freshman Zach Youngberg (Delran, N.J.) took the loss for Neumann after pitching 3.2 innings and surrendering two runs and the lead, but only allowed one hit and two walks in relief.
For Arcadia, eight Knights recorded hits on the day with Freeman and Chasmar leading the squad with two hits apiece. Freeman also picked up an RBI and two runs scored while Chasmar recorded three RBI.
Arcadia will play its fifth game in four days on Monday and conclude the team's 2014 season when the Knights travel to The College of New Jersey for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference contest.
