Baseball Team Concludes 2014 Season with 5-2 Loss at TCNJ

Box Score EWING, N.J. – The Arcadia University baseball team concluded its 2014 season with a 5-2 non-conference loss at The College of New Jersey Monday afternoon. The Knights scored first in the contest with two runs in the first inning, and would hold the Lions scoreless for the game, except for the fifth inning when TCNJ took the lead with five runs of their own.

Arcadia finishes its season at 9-26-1, while TCNJ improved to 20-16.

Runs came at a premium for both teams, as each team only scored in one half-inning each, Arcadia in the first and TCNJ in the fifth, as pitching for both teams shut down the other's offense.

The Knights struck first in the game, putting up two on the board to lead off the game in the first inning. Senior David Jacobs (Havre de Grace, Md.) led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a base hit from classmate Taylor Schon (Scotch Plains, N.J.). They both would move up 90 feet because of a groundout, which put two in scoring position with only one out. Both then came around to score after senior Jay Zehring (Manassas, Va.) induced an error by the second baseman, which gave the Knights an early 2-0 advantage.

Senior starter Jordan Hofferman (Elkins Park, Pa.) retired the first eight batters of the game in order and held TCNJ to only one hit for the first four innings, but the Lions broke through in the fifth inning, taking their first lead of the game after scoring five in the frame. Three consecutive singles by the Lions to lead off the fifth loaded the bases and a walk put across their first run of the game. TCNJ got the other four runs by way of a two-run single and a two-run double to make it 5-2 in favor of the Lions.

Hofferman lasted 6.1 innings in the loss for Arcadia, surrendering five runs on seven hits and three walks. Aside from the fifth inning, he shut down TCNJ and only allowed two hits and a walk in the other 5.1 innings on the hill.

Seniors Robert Worrell (West Chester, Pa.) and David Behler (Lehighton, Pa.) pitched 0.2 innings and 1.0 inning, respectively, in relief to finish the game on the mound for Arcadia. The two seniors combined for only one hit allowed with each recording a strikeout.

For the Lions, senior Justin Ely (Bordentown, N.J.) picked up his first win of the season after tossing five innings and giving up two runs on four hits and three walks. Freshman John-Lucas Duffy (Rockaway, N.J.) pitched the final two innings and allowed just two hits to pick up his first career save.

Sophomore Michael Nessel (Stuart, Fla.) led the Knights at the plate after going 2-for-4, while Schon; seniors Elliott Freeman (Bangor, Pa.) and Brian Innella (Commack, N.Y.), and sophomore Connor Arsenault (Medford, N.J.) each contributed a base-hit for the Knights.

This was the last game of the season for Arcadia and the Knights' next game will be in 2015.
