READING, Pa. – The Arcadia women's basketball extended its winning streak to three games with a 69-66 Commonwealth Conference victory at Alvernia University Wednesday night. The Knights improved to 10-9 overall and 6-4 in conference play with the win, and snapped a four-game road losing streak.
The six conference victories are the most since Arcadia won seven league games in 2006-07, its final season in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference, while its 10 wins are tied for the third-most in a single season in program history.
The Knights never trailed in this one as junior forward
Valerie DiMuro knocked down a jumper off a pass from junior guard
Dominique Hassinger on the team's first possession of the game and later used an 11-3 run to open a game-high 11 points advantage with just over eight minutes left in the first half. Junior forward
Addy Crenny capped the run with a jumper off a feed from senior guard/forward
Megan Fox to put Arcadia up 26-15.
That lead was cut to five at the break after senior guard Kaitlyn Yoh converted a jumper with four seconds left in the first half to make it a 35-30 game in favor of the Knights. Arcadia quickly pushed its lead back to 10 in in the opening minutes of the second after junior guard
Maureen Fiocca drained a three to make it a 40-30 game, but Alvernia would gradually chip away at that advantage and tied the game at 50 following back-to-back baskets from sophomore center Tyra Robert.
Crenny put the Knights back in the lead for good with a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession and Arcadia was up by five following a three from Hassinger gave the Knights a 65-60 lead with 1:39 to go. Senior guard Myra Lobb sank a pair of free throws a minute later, and Yoh then fouled Hassinger off the in-bounding pass to put her at the line shooting 1-and-1. Hassinger missed the free throw and Roberts controlled the rebound, eventually setting up a good jumper from junior guard Stevie Fortuna that made it a one-point game with 20 seconds remaining.
Fiocca was sent to the line twice in the final 15 seconds of the game, shooting 1-and-1 each time, and drained each of her four free throw attempts to secure the win for Arcadia. The Crusaders had the ball with nine seconds on the clock after the second set of free throws, but were unable to get off a potential game-tying three before the final buzzer sounded.
Fiocca scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Knights to the win, while Crenny registered her conference-leading 14th double-double after netting 17 points and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. DiMuro also scored in double figures with 12 points, 10 of which came in the first half, while Hassinger finished with six points, nine rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
Yoh scored 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor to go with five assists for Alvernia (6-12, 2-8 CC), while Roberts posted a double-double of her own with 14 points and 10 boards. Lobb added 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Arcadia outscored the Crusaders 15-6 off turnovers and had a 17-7 advantage in second chance scoring in the game. Alvernia had an 18-2 edge in bench scoring.
The Knights will be in search of their fourth straight win Saturday when they travel to first-place Stevenson University (15-2, 9-0 CC) for a 3 p.m. Commonwealth Conference contest.
