Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sound Defensive Effort Helps Propel Women’s Basketball to 63-38 Victory over Rosemont

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's basketball team held visiting Rosemont College to just 16.9 percent (11-65) shooting from the field as it recorded its first victory of the 2015-16 season by a final count of 63-38. The Knights are now 1-2 for the season, while the Ravens fell to 0-3.

The Scarlet and Grey held the Ravens scoreless for the game's first eight plus minutes while jumping out to a 13-0 lead. Senior Maureen Fiocca deposited the game's first bucket on a fastbreak layup just under two minutes into the contest, an Irelynn Donovan three capped the run. Rosemont retaliated with a pair of threes a minute apart before Donovan buried another three to close the quarter at 16-6.

Rosemont scored the first four points of the second frame in the first minute and a half before the senior forwards Addy Crenny and Valerie DiMuro combined for 10 consecutive points. The first eight points of that run came in the paint before Crenny knocked down a jumper to open a 26-10 lead with three and a half minutes to go. Fiocca converted a last second lay-in on an assist from Imani Alston to send the game the half at 31-16 in favor of the hosts.

Crenny and DiMuro each pulled in 11 boards in the opening 20 minutes while scoring eight points. The duo led the Knights to a 20-0 scoring advantage in the paint in the first half. The defense kept the Ravens to 18.2% (6-33) shooting from the field in the half.

With eight of the first nine points coming off the hands of Fiocca, the Knights opened a 40-16 lead less than half way through the third quarter. Freshman Camille Menns scored the Knights' final five points of the quarter to set up a 50-27 lead heading into the final stanza.

The Knights continued to distance themselves in the fourth as DiMuro laid in two points to start the frame to extend the lead to 25. The Knights led by as many as 27 courtesy of Sammy Downham's first career points, a three pointer, with less than a minute to go.

Fiocca recorded 15 points in the final 20 minutes followed by Menns with seven. On defense, the Knights held Rosemont to 15.6% (5-32) shooting from the field in the half including 9.1% (1-11) from distance.
Arcadia controlled the entire game, particularly in the paint where the Knights outscored the Ravens 32-10 and a 61-47 advantage on the glass. DiMuro finished with a double-double (10 pts, 13 reb) for the second straight game.
Ayanna Thompson led Rosemont with 11 points, while Leilani Naone-Carter recorded a double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Arcadia heads to Immaculata on Tuesday for its final game before the holiday. The Knights return from the break to travel to Wesley next Sunday, Nov. 29.
