Men’s basketball closes regular season with 76-65 win at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team outscored host Widener University 41-24 in the opening half on its way to a 76-65 Commonwealth Conference victory at Widener University Saturday to close out the 2014-15 regular season.
 
The Knights improved to 14-11 overall and 10-6 in conference play with the win, finishing in a four-way tie for second in the final conference standings with Alvernia University, Hood College and Stevenson University. Based on the on the conference tiebreaking procedures, Arcadia fell to the No. 5 seed and will travel to fourth-seeded Alvernia Monday for a first round conference tournament game.. 
 
The Knights improved to 14-11 overall and 10-6 in conference play with the win. The Pride fell to 9-16 overall and 2-12 in conference play after suffering their 14th straight loss to close out the season after a 9-2 start to the year.  
 
Arcadia never trailed in the game, scoring the first eight points of the contest as part of a 14-2 run that was capped by a three from junior John Landro five minutes into the game. Widener pulled within seven off a layup from junior Jermaine Kamara with 5:23 left in the first half, but the Knights closed the period with a 12-2 run to open a commanding 41-24 lead at the break.
 
An early seven-point run gave Arcadia a game-high 23-point lead after a triple from senior Joe Brown gave the Knights a 53-30 advantage just over five minutes into the second half, but Widener came storming back, outscoring Arcadia 25-6 over the next eight and a half minutes to pull back within four, 59-55 with 6:21 left.
 
Landro and Brown then drained back-to-back threes to put the Knights back up by 10 with five minutes left and the two teams traded baskets from there before a bucket from sophomore Kendall Green made it 71-63 with 1:11 on the clock. Widener was forced to foul from there and Arcadia went 5 of 6 at the line in the final minute to close out the win.
 
Landro scored a game-high 17 points with five rebounds to lead the Knights, while Brown was close behind with 16 points and six boards. Senior Torrell Candelaria and sophomore Ryan Kelley scored 12 points with three assists each, while senior Travis Saltus chipped in with 10 points and four boards off the bench.
 
Freshman Sardayah Sambo scored 16 points on an impressive 8 of 9 shooting performance for the Pride, while classmate Sam Smith added 13 points with three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Green finished with 12 points and four rebounds.
