Baseball Rallies from 10 Down to Record Dramatic 17-16 Extra-Inning Victory at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Arcadia University baseball team overcame a 10-run deficit to record a 17-16 Commonwealth Conference victory at Stevenson University Monday, and in doing so snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Knights improved to 13-9 overall and 9-6 in conference play with the win, while the Mustangs fell to 13-13-2 overall and 10-5 in league action. Despite the loss, Stevenson won the season series 2-1.

Arcadia was already down 7-4 as the game went into the bottom of the fifth, where Stevenson exploded for seven to take what appeared to be a commanding 14-4 lead. The Knights got right back in the game with a six-run sixth inning, scoring twice on junior Connor Arsenault's single to center before loading the bases for senior Tom Wagner, who drove a 2-2 offering over left field fence for the first grand slam and homerun of his collegiate career that cut the deficit to 14-10.

Stevenson plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch and an slow roller to second off the bat of senior Troy Miller that grew its lead to 16-10. That lead evaporated the following frame as the Knights hung another six-spot on the board to tie the game.

Freshman Nick Cardace started a string of three straight run-scoring hits with an RBI-double to left that was followed by sophomore Justin Chasmar's RBI-single to right and junior Michael Nessel's double to center that scored a pair of run, bringing Arcadia back within two with just one away in the inning. The sacks were full when freshman Drew Coisson stepped to the plate two batters later. He grounded into what appeared to be a tailor-made double play that would have ended the inning, but the Mustangs got just one out as second as the throw to first got away, allowing Nessel score from third and Aresenault to cross the plate from second to tie the game.

Arcadia appeared to be primed to regain the lead for the first time since the top of the second after Wagner singled through the left side and advanced to third on junior Nick Todero's double to center that followed to start the inning, but junior Alec Romanowski was then brought in to pitch and he quickly worked out of the jam, recording three quick outs to end the threat.

Sophomore Jake Lloyd yielded just a single walk in the bottom of the ninth and the game then moved to the 10th, where Aresnault sent a double down the left field line to start the inning, putting the go-ahead run in scoring position once again for the Knights. Freshman Pat Shevlin was sent in as a pinch runner and advanced to third after junior Tom Connell was called for a balk with one away. Connell bounced back to strike out Coisson for the second out of the inning before senior Andonis Yiantsos ripped a double to the game in left center that drove in Shevlin with the game-winning run.

Lloyd got sophomore Matt Marinelli to ground out to short to start the bottom of the 10th before walking junior Nick Peifer and putting the potential game-tying run on base. Lloyd worked out of the inning as senior Brody Tennant flied out to center and sophomore Kevin Kopas popped out to second to end the game.

Wagner finished 3 for 5 with a homerun, five RBI and two runs scored, while Yiantsos went 3 for 5 with a double, a triple, four runs scored and another driven in. Arsenault finished the day 3 for 3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, while Nessel was 2 for 6 with two runs scored and two more driven in. Lloyd evened his record at 1-1 after allowing just one hit over three and two-third scoreless innings of relief.

Connell took the loss on the hill after allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts in the 10th. Tennant was 1 for 6 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored, while Miller finished 5 for 7 at the dish with two doubles, six RBI and a run scored.

Arcadia returns to action Wednesday when it hosts a non-conference game against Stevens Institute of Technology at Erny Field.
