ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team split a conference doubleheader at Lebanon Valley College Saturday afternoon, dropping a pitcher's duel in game one, 1-0, but managed the split by winning game two by a score of 7-1. The Knights are now 12-18 overall with the split and 3-9 in Commonwealth Conference play, while the Dutchmen are now 7-21 overall and 4-8 in conference.
Game 1: Arcadia 0, Lebanon Valley 1Game one was a real pitcher's duel, with both pitchers shutting the door on the opposing offense for the first five innings. For the Knights, junior
Erin Wilson did not give up a hit until the bottom half of the third inning, surrendering a two-out single to left field and would not let a runner past second base until the fourth inning after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout from the Dutchmen.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning after a leadoff single from the Dutchmen followed by a stolen base to put the tie-breaking run at second with no outs. Junior Emily Johnson recorded what would be game-winning RBI after singling to right field to plate sophomore Sammy Bost.
The Knights had an opportunity in the top of the seventh to tie and potentially take the lead in the top of the seventh after consecutive singles from junior
Alicia McMahon and Wilson led off the inning and a sac bunt from freshman
Tori Zaccaria put two runners in scoring position with one out. However, a strikeout and a foul out ended the threat and also the game.
Wilson took the loss for the Knights, dropping her record to 5-9, after pitching the complete six innings and surrendering the one run while scattering five hits and striking out three with no walks. Junior Haley Neff was credited with the win for Lebanon Valley, improving to 3-10 on the year, after going the distance and scattering seven hits while striking out five.
Six Knights recorded base-hits in game one with senior
Jessica Shotwell recording a multi-hit game after going 2-3.
Game Two: Arcadia 7, Lebanon Valley 1After being held scoreless in the first game, the Knights got on the board quickly in game two, putting five up on the scoreboard in the first half inning. Shotwell picked up her third hit of the day after producing a leadoff single to get the offense started for Arcadia. A defensive miscue and a stolen base then put runners on second and third with no outs for the Knights, which set up an RBI-groundout from freshman
Amanda Hess. Junior Nikki Larro then singled and stole second to put two in scoring position once again for Arcadia but with one out. This then set up McMahon, who singled up the middle to score two and give the Knights a 3-0 advantage. After a single and a hit by pitch, Arcadia had bases loaded with only one away, and because of consecutive singles from junior
Sara Boyadjis and Shotwell, McMahon and sophomore
Laura Christine were able to score and expand the lead to 5-0 after the top half of the first in favor of Arcadia.
Christine threw to a scoreless first, but Lebanon Valley responded in the bottom half of the second cutting their deficit to four. A double and three consecutive singles from the Dutchmen scored their first run of the game, but Zaccaria recorded an outfield assist to home to keep the four-run lead for the Knights.
The Knights added two more insurance runs in the top half of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. Boyadjis led off the inning with a double and ended up scoring two batters later after two throwing errors by the Dutchmen. Hess then got on base by way of a bunt single and Gunia then scored because of another throwing miscue from Lebanon Valley.
After the run in the second inning, Christine (5-6) was able to hold the Dutchmen scoreless for the rest of the game and pick up the complete-game win after scattering 12 hits in seven innings. Sophomore Haley Christensen took the loss for Lebanon Valley, dropping her record to 4-8 on the year, after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings.
Eight different Knights recorded base-hits in game two as Boyadjis paced the Knights offensively, going 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Shotwell picked up her second multi-hit game of the day, going 2-4 at the plate in game two with an RBI and a run scored and also finished the day 4-7 at the plate.
