Baseball Ends in 5-5 Tie with Neumann

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Arcadia University baseball team battles visiting Neumann University to a 5-5 draw at Erny Field Sunday before the game was called due to darkness after 11 innings.

The game was tied and four heading in the eighth, where Neumann (12-8-1) pulled ahead on freshman Joey Podorenko's single up the middle that plated junior Daniel Nicolaisen from second with two down in the inning. Arcadia (16-10-1) answered quickly in the bottom half of the frame, with senior Andonis Yiantsos drawing a leadoff walk and moving to second on a balk before scoring as sophomore Justin Chasmar reached on an error.

Arcadia had a chance for more in the eighth, putting runners on second and third with no outs, but was unable to score the go-ahead run. Chasmar was cut down at home on junior George Pagan's grounder to second and junior Nick Todero was thrown out at the plate on a double-steal bid. Freshman Nick Cardace followed by grounding out to second to end the inning.

Both team left runners in scoring position in the ninth, 10th and 11th innings, but were unable to get a run home.

Todero was left on third in the bottom of the 10th as Pagan hit a rocket down the first base line that was caught on a diving play by senior Alex DiGenova to end the inning, and Yiantsos struck out swinging with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th to end the game. Neumann had the sacks full with just one away in the top of the 11th, but sophomore Shakore Bragg-Taylor was gunned down at the plated by Yiantsos as he tried to score following Nicolaisen's foul-out down the right field line.

Arcadia jumped out to an early lead when Yiantsos scored from third on junior Connor Arsenault's ground out to shortstop, and Neumann drew even in the top of the third when Nicolaisen came home on Pedorenko's double down the line in left.

Neumann took a 3-1 lead one inning later as senior Matt Sheneman drove in senior Buddy Elgin with a double down the left field line and later scored on sophomore Nick Panissidi's single up the middle. Arcadia got one run back in the bottom half of the frame when Arsenault scored from third on sophomore Michael Ferrence's ground out to second after getting on with a triple down the line in right, and tied the game at 4-4 when Todero scored on a balk after the teams traded runs in the fifth.

Arcadia will be back in action Tuesday, hosting a non-conference game against DeSales University at Erny Field.
